I reported earlier that I have .010" endshake in my 686-1. After cleaning the gun and spending a little time with it, I believe most of the problem is with the yoke. The slot where the sideplate / yoke screw engages the yoke has gotten really screwed up. It looks like the screw was tightened onto the button on the end of the yoke and increased the slot width.

I think that most of my endshake is due to the sloppiness between the screw and the yoke slot.

Now, questions.

Would ANY (a replacemnet) old style "L" frame yoke fit?

Would a new style "L" frame yoke fit with a new spring loaded screw?

What kind of "hand fitting" would be required to replace the yoke?

Thanks.

You can correct gross yoke/frame endshake by peening the yoke button on the screw side only. Rest the yoke on a lead babbit or equivalent. Lightly peen and retrue with a file. For detailed instructions see the Kuhnhausen book, pg 69. It won't cost anymore that a new yoke and you'll appreciate the vast amount of info.

If you have the old style yoke .Try the other screw in it.you can call smith up and ask for a endshake screw

Thanks all,

Sound advise given. upon closer inspection, my 686's yoke has been butchered. The button has lost 1/2 material thickness in the area of the screw. It has also been severely "hammered" upon to compensate. The hole where the ejector rod goes through is also very sloppy. I'm not sure there is anythin left about the yoke to fix.

The strange thing is, is that the rest of the gun is great. I popped the side plate and it all looks new. The action feels crisp and tight. I put the GREAT wooden stocks in my sock drawer and replaced then with rubbers.

Ken, yep, I'll be looking for anouther yoke. I sent you a PM.
