I purchased my S&W Model 10 for use up at my home in NC. Since I have been here, I have been having fun with it shooting of my deck and the rest of my property. I haven't used it for it's primary reason, snakes and hope I do not. What a feeling. I will be sad to go back to South FL for a couple of months, I hope August comes around faster than usual.

I might have to put NC on my list of retiree to states. A few months ago my son asked me where I'd like to retire to. I told him a place where I could shoot off my back deck.

Come on down! I retired here in NC 15 years ago when I was 53. Of course I've lived here all my 68 years.

There's plenty of room to shoot from your back deck if you choose the right location.

This is my grandson getting ready to shoot his very own Rock Ola M1 carbine in the back yard. You can see the house down the hill aways. "Aways" is a North Carolina word meaning not-up-close.

Having a summer house where I can shoot from the porch and escape the HOT South Florida "summers" is also my retirement dream,

NC is beautiful , last summer I was looking 40 minutes north of Asheville near Burnsville , IIRC NC has a 9% state income tax that includes pensions for FT residents, driving another 20 minutes north enters Tennessee which has no state income tax .

I looked at the tax issue as well.

In the two years since my post, things have changed for me. My son is now in AL with my daughter in law and the kids. I retired in December of 2012, although I still work part time. My daughter moved to Austin in June of this year. That's permanent move south, although she might not stay in Austin forever.

Right now my wife and I are in Austin nearing the end of our two week vacation. FL, AL, New Orleans, a night in Lake Charles, two in Dallas, and now five in Austin. It's what is becoming our annual southern trip. We both expect that we'll move south permanently, it's just a matter of when and where. Last year TN seemed to be on the list, but this year, I'm less sure of that.

Somewhere between Mobile and Austin, probably closer to Austin.
