You have a beautiful carry gun but what happens to it if you have to use it?

I went thru the thread on the perfect handgun and there are some beautiful guns there. Have you ever thought about what will happen to it if you have to use it? Even if it is self defense, The law will probably take it until the case is resolved. It will not treated kindly. If you get it back there is a big possibility that it will be worse for wear. For this reason, I carry a gun(yes I have carry permit) that I can do without and I did not spend that much money on.

What are your thoughts?

Should never carry a super nice gun for this very reason.The weapon might also be needed to smash out a window,or other hostile activity .This is not the time to be worried about a prized gun.

I totally concur. There are plenty of perfectly fine and easily replaceable guns on the market.

There is an article in a current gun magazine in which the editor states he carries a stock polymer frame semi-auto, for the reasons mentioned above.

This is the very reason I own Glocks. Very reliable. Built to take a beating and way easier to replace than a 3" model 66

I came to the same conclusion. I went from a heavy, expensive six shooter to a compact/lighter pistol with a bigger bullets, more rounds.

It has no safety and a long revolver like trigger. It's been dead bang reliable and just as accurate as the revolver without the magnum muzzle blast and recoil.

If I have to use it and the police think they need it. I can get another one for 1/3 the price of my revolvers.

I carry a glock most of the time, so no worries.
Or a S&W M+Pc in .40
Either can easily be replaced.

But i have carried my snub 19 and other revolvers that are special to me.

If i am ever in a situation where i have to use it, (hopefully never),
losing my gun will be the last thing on my mind.
Think about it.

I don't carry cheap guns, but I do carry easily replaceable guns. If I have to defend myself with one losing a $1000 gun will be a small price to pay.

The fancy flatware only comes out for company.

I carry my "perfect guns." Every gun is replaceable, whereas I am not.....I'm like a diamond crusted Stradivarius. Losing a +/- $1000 Smith or Colt is a lot cheaper than I'd pay to stay alive.

Just don't carry your Singer 1911 or your Triple Lock and all is well.

You should carry something you shoot well in CQC simulation, and is powerful enough to stop the attacker.

Having charges dismissed is not sufficient to assure your firearm is returned. You need a court order to retrieve it from the police. They know it, and will give you a run-around indefinitely until you get the order, keeping you in the dark.

That's why I carry a Glock. They can keep it as long as they wish. I can get another one just like it in less than an hour.

The chances of my having to use my gun are minuscule. It's nothing fancy, an early 640 from 1990, but I like it a lot and trust it.

But as Chud333 pointed out above, if push comes to thug losing the J-frame will be the very least of my worries.

Saving my ancient bacon will be the only consideration.

Since getting my carry permit, I have thought about this quite alot. Currently I have a 3914NL (obviously 9mm), a Kimber Compact CDP II in 45 ACP and and Dan Wesson Guardian in 38 Super. I shoot them well and with practice fairly fast at 7 yds. All on a 5" plate.
Two reasons I am going to different handguns. The first is they are too damned expensive to replace. (I do have others I can use that are similar.)
The other reason, and off topic, is the triggers on the 11s are too light. Stress and all that in a situation where the perp changes his mind in a very quick manner.
So I now am training with a Sig 220 in 45 ACP, a Sig 239 in 9mm, and a Ruger LCR in 9mm for summer carry in the pocket.
I drifted, but yeah, I don't want to try to replace the first 3. Especially here in Kali.

I used to think like some of you. Always worrying about the gun. Then I realized, that would be the least of my problems, at that point!

Not to mention, I don't want to bet my life on an inexpensive gun, just because I'm worried it may not be returned to me.

I carry the absolute best gun for the job, that I am the most proficient with, regardless of cost! That's what I feel my life is worth. I don't worry about the gun. It's just a tool, nothing more.

I take my chances. I've been carrying the same full size Kimber for 6 years.. And so it's the gun I know best and most trust my life to.
Besides, it's so well worn at this point, I probably wouldn't notice another ding.

If I lose my 3913, 6906 or 3" 66.... I go home and get the back up out of the safe ........ they were all bought decades ago when I settled on my carry guns.

All cost less than my auto insurance deductible.........

That is how I got into Glocks!

I used to carry one variation or another of a nicely built 1911 pattern pistol; and my friends used to frequently chide me about hoping I'd never have to actually use it; so, finally, I went out and bought my first Glock.

I really hated carrying that Glock; but slowly (very slowly) I got used to shooting it; and, little by little, I made an improvement here and another improvement there, until after I finally got that Glock to be, 'tolerable', I ended up with a $1500 dollar Glock. (There's no logic!)

Not quite as bad as a custom-built 1911 pattern semi-auto; but close enough for me to realize that old habits die hard; and, 'Ya just got 'a shoot what ya just got 'a shoot.' So, hopefully, I won't ever need to actually use it - Right?

I agree, to a point. I won't bet my life on an inexpensive throwaway. An M&P Shield is my EDC, goes bang every time. Been CC'ing every day for 10 years, haven't had to draw yet. If I do, the last thing I'm worried about is getting my piece back. As long as I can walk away from a shooting incident, the rest will take care of itself,,,,, eventually.
