You have a beautiful carry gun but what happens to it if you have to use it?

I think people way over-think this. The vast majority of justifiable self defense shootings are pretty cut and dried. The authorities aren't going to confiscate your hand gun if you're clearly in the right.

This +1.

Also, in the event that the court rules against you and confiscates the gun, it's very likely that they'll also confiscate any others that you might have at home.

Who cares?

I truly wonder about threads such as this. See the same stuff on car forums.

"I have a new XYZ convertible. How can I keep fingerprints off the door when I open/close it?" NOT MAKING THIS UP!

A gun is a tool. Not carrying it because it might become evidence is dumb.

Be safe.

It depends a lot on the state you're in. There are some that make it harder or nearly impossible to get it back. Since I travel over several states that cover the spectrum, I do consider this.

At the same time I do carry what I am comfortable with.

My carry and nightstand guns are polymer.

The fancy flatware only comes out for company.

Yep! Me too. Akin to Cool Whip salad bowls for day to day meals and uninvited guests. They're pretty practical. The fancy utensils for the invited guests. On the other hand if one of my fancy utensils had to be disposed of in order to prevent a case of food poisoning it wouldn't bother me much.

Goodness, I couldn't care any less about 'losing' a gun or damaging one if it does the job it was meant to do.

My truck costs a HECK of a lot more than any gun I'd carry and the risk of 'losing' it is FAR greater.

It's a firearm, period. It's not like losing a kid.

Fear of losing it is why I rely on a $50.00 RG 22 revolver for self defense.

I'm kidding of course. Fear of losing my handgun is the least of my worries about a self defense shooting.

I went thru the thread on the perfect handgun and there are some beautiful guns there. Have you ever thought about what will happen to it if you have to use it? Even if it is self defense, The law will probably take it until the case is resolved. It will not treated kindly. If you get it back there is a big possibility that it will be worse for wear. For this reason, I carry a gun(yes I have carry permit) that I can do without and I did not spend that much money on.

What are your thoughts?

You appreciate your perfect and beautiful handgun while you're carrying it for its awesomeness, and in the case of the gravest extreme, you appreciate it for giving you the joy, pleasure and service it gave you, and move onto the next perfect and beautiful one in your library (I prefer "library" to "armory".... I have a bourbon "library" and an ammo "library" too) to cover down for you while the primary perfect and beautiful one is in custody. Repeat as necessary. And if it gets some wrinkles and character while it's away, it's still perfect and beautiful because of what it did for you.

Too Much Wear from Daily CCW

After my little 642 got so beaten up from daily carry, I have now decided that that will be my daily CCW. I'm keeping my nicer SS's for special occasions (BBQ Party, etc). :D

FWIW, the attached image is AFTER a complete cleaning.

Are these guns anodized, painted, er whut? The body no longer matches the barrel and cylinder. Seriously thinking about replacing this with something in SS, like maybe a 640 or 649... That way I can get SS and .357 too! That matches my other S&W revolvers so never would have to worry about mixing up ammo in a lurch, aka brain fart.

Gentlemen, the probabilities of one needing to use their carry firearm are very, very low.
And among enthusiast like us, who are alert, self-aware and know the principles of alertness and self-defense, even lower.

I'd say that if you have a gun that you would love carrying, thinking "oh no,if I use it I'll lose it" is a bad approach.

If you're worried about holster rash or it getting stolen... those may be more understandable. But until then, proudly carry your awesome firearm and enjoy it. Life is too short to be carrying ugly stuff.

I live in the peoples republic of NY and have carried some pricey guns over the course of many years. I'm not loosing sleep over it getting banged up/dropped or for some reason going swimming.

In my state the odds are if I use a hand gun in a defense type situation, not only will they take that one "for Evidence" any other handgun I own will also be confiscated along with my carry permit. Possibly my wife's handguns also, a lot here depends where you live, where a incident happens and how they feel about guns.

A shooting in my house the gun used of course, again depending on circumstances possibly all guns in house. I live quite rural and most of my county has common sense and we have a decent sheriff but you never know! We also have state police up here and with the hierarchy of that group lets just say I hope the sheriff arrives first.

I rarely carry my nice Smith's that's why I have a different pistol for carry/back-up that I can afford to lose or get damaged. It's a sturdy very reliable piece that can take a beating and keep on firing.

I really don't concern myself with that, all 3 of my CWs are replaceable at resonable cost. What matters to me in the event of needing or using them is that I come out alive! ;)
I never would carry one of my Collectables!

In 1965 I bought a 6 in. Python and it went out of the house every morning with me for 40 some years. I gave it to my son so I can watch him use it. I now use M27s and M29s that are P&R. If one gets stolen, lost or the law takes it I will just say it's good to be alive and go home and get something else. Larry

Real Life.....
My daughter used her's to stop an armed robber from executing her self and 3 fellow employees at her place of business. He had the money, then told them to face the wall and kneel down . Around here they don't like to leave any witnesses to testify at a trial. She said she wasn't going to let him do that .
Police took her gun as evidence. After the first trial , the appeals started, several new trials , more appeals case working up the ladder in appeals courts, etc, etc, etc. Now several years have gone by.
After criminal case, civil case (she shot but didn't kill him) more years go buy....no suit ever gets dismissed...everything must be held as evidence , criminals have their RIGHTS !
Seven or eight years have gone by....she tries to recover her gun.....is told it has been "misplaced"...SORRY !
The criminal has all the rights, you will likely loose you weapon.
DO NOT carry anything you will miss or that is not easily replaceable...not in Louisiana anyway.
True story , I was a witness.
Gary
