The S&W 76 was actually a very nice sub-gun. I found it to be reliable and accurate for its intended purpose. A CO of the Firearms and Tactics Section (lt. Frank McGee at the time, of the NYPD) once told me the gun got its name from the fact that it cost $76 dollars. Not sure if that's correct, but that was what I was told.

Once time Frank had a salesman try to sell him the MP-5 (they were $1,200 bucks at the time) to replace our S&W 76s (yeah, I know, they eventually did). The salesman's pitch was, our cops deserved "nothing but the best." Frank then said to the guy, that means NYC officers ought to be driving Mercedes and not Fords. That shut him up.

That Smith subgun looks just like the Swedish K that some of the alphabet guys had in SE Asia in the 60's.

There is a reason the gun looks like the Swede's M45 "Karl Gustav". Sweden figured out the M45 was used by the US entities in Viet Nam and shut off sales and supply of parts for the Gustav. Anticipating a large government order, S&W produced their version of the well loved Swedish gun in hopes of selling them to SEALs and other special units. The S&W gun had a selector switch and parts were not interchangeable. Magazines were a bit smaller than the Swede but the M45 magazine can be easily modified to fit the Smith. The Gustav magazine design is considered the best subgun magazine ever built. A few were purchased by various military reps but the gun did not catch on and the war ended. S&W advertised in the police magazines of the time trying to move the guns but they were slow sellers in the days of revolvers and shotguns. I recall ads in "Law and Order" magazine offering the guns for well under $100 for several years back in the 70s and early 80s.

Besides a few wheelguns I also own a .45 Ruger bottom feeder. KP90. All metal. Heavy. Been looking for a .22 auto for the wife to shoot. Saw a Ruger 22/45 at a good price. Wanted... just COULDN'T buy a plastic pistol. Passed on a primo P97DC today for the same reason.

Well... THAT, and I want cash in hand so the next time I see a 4" 66 I don't have to let it get away....

EDIT: Well, they got me. Turner's put the 22/45 out for $200. Couldn't pass it up.

I'm not a big full auto fan, but the guns shown here rate a 10 out of 10 on the Coolness Factor.

Before we completed shooting the course (approximately 725 rounds) all eight of the "other than steel" had quit totally or were down for significant repairs. Big Cholla
