Local gun show was very slow. Saw what appeared to be a HB Model 10, but upon inspection , it was a 4 screw M&P, ser # C 387,xxx. Funny grips, and heavy barrel? 1954-55 gun with a HB? HB was not an option until 10-1 in 1957?
I think it was sent to S&W for HB, re-blue, and TT & TH! The Cokes are nice for a $250 gun show find! Put a set of like new Magnas on it.

Looks like you dont have any need for those old wood grips, The M&P looks great with the magas!
I can give the old grips a good home,,,,,

gad ,, now this is really weird. I purchased this 38 M&P last year. I believe it was sent back to Smith and Wesson for a re work. The only indicator is the serial # being stamped on the underside of the barrel, with a diamond and an S as the prefix instead of a 'C'.

The ser # on mine is C3876xx. How strange is that?

Target trigger, target hammer, heavy barrel, semi-patridge front sight, and J.P. Varnick engraved on the sideplate.

I believe the diamond and S indicate a refinish in standard blue. The gun probably had the name engraved on the side plate at that time and the TH and TT installed.

Is there a date stamped on the left side of the grip frame (i.e. 9 55 would be an example of a gun refinished in September 1955)?

Good find. The thrill of the hunt is why we all go to gun shows, pawnshop and local gun stores. Its nice when you find a deal like you did.
