I used to think the hammerless models were just about the
ugliest thing ever made. Until I trained with one. Now it's my favorite, and it looks real purty.

My favorite 38 Specials are my Model 60 and its companion a Model 60-4. For my needs they are both GREAT guns.

A near favorite .38 Special of mine is a 1957 Colt Officer's Model Match. Pythons have nothing on these fine revolvers nor do they look any better in my view.

10 shots, 10 yards. 148 grain hollow base wadcutter over 2.8 grains of Bulls-Eye

Even so, I'd have a hard time deciding between the Officer's Model Match and my Model 14-4 K-38 which also puts 10 shots in there at 10 yards.

This one; Model 10-8 with target stocks, circa 1980. No-frills, very accurate, a lot of fun to shoot, and pretty easy to carry.

I have eleven various .38 Specials,both Colt and S&W. Choosing a favorite would be hard unless it was for a certain shooting or packing task at hand. After all,they are all special to me for on reason or another.

Hmmmm, that's a hard one. I'll say the 15-2. Then again, the 60 is pretty good too. And what about that 14-3. Then there is the tried and true 10-6. Yeah, let's go with the 15-2.

The 4" Heavy Duty and the 6" Outdoorsman. The full sized .38's N frames are my favorite, although the M-10 is a great all around pistol.

Like senecaap, my favorite 38 Specials are N-frames. In my case it's two Heavy Dutys:

Top gun is a 1938 vintage 5" that shows lots of holster wear and has a smooth trigger from being fired a bunch. Stocks are post war Magna's. Haven't found an affordable set of pre-war Magnas to dress it in. They'd have to be worn a little to match the gun.

The nickeled gun is a 1953 4" sporting Grashorn Gunworks elk antler stocks.

Both barrels are prominently marked on the right side, "38 S&W Special Ctg".

I'm glad the N-frame supporters finally showed up, because I really like these massive .38s as well.

Too many favorites to pick just one, but I have to go with the elegance of this 1932 Outdoorsman with upgraded sights, ivory stocks, and a period grip adapter ...

... or maybe the very picture of a working gun, this Depression-era Heavy Duty that now sports Grashorn stags...

But there's a space in my heart for small-frame guns as well. Another 1947 snub...

The appeal of these three .38s is not just on the surface. I wouldn't like any of them as much if they didn't all pretty much hit where they aim.

Hey, I just bought a 10-8 38 special. The firing pin has a little play. I was told from one gunsmith that it might not be safe to shoot. When I spoke to someone where I bought it, they said it is supposed to be like that. Any info will help. Thanks.

my 642 because it's the only .38 I got and I carry it a lot so I shoot it a lot. I'm going to put a crimson trace on it so I can shoot it even better. fun little gun it has a smith trigger job so the trigger is very smooth.

The hammer nose is supposed to move around a small amount.

but--

What is your favorite S&W .38 model?

Sir, I'm not much of a .38 guy. I've owned exactly two, a 1951 Combat Masterpiece and an early '80s Model 49. I have only the Model 49 now. It's a good little gun--makes more sense to me than a K-frame .38 for carry.

In the 4 snubs I have, 2 are air/light weights, 642-1 and a Colt Cobra. Have to go with the Colt. In steel/ss, a 649-1 & 10-5. Both great shooters but the j is an easier cc. My 4" 38's are a 15-3, 10-8HB and a 357 66-1. A tossup between the 15 and the 66 using 38sp. Why limit yourself to just one favorite.

As I was testing a 14-7 at the gun shop, I asked my older buddy behind the counter what his favorite .38 was? A 67 was his quick response.

I hope this link has accurate info, like everything else on the internet.
