Your Favorite Big Cat

Mountain Lion hands down for me. I have seen one three times in the wild and each time it made my hair on my neck stand up.
We have a resident cat at the ranch. It shows itself a couple times a year. I have only seem him twice. Once with my daughter who issued a vulgarity at the sight of it and once while guiding a group of bird hunters . The cat broke from cover and ran for the creek and heaviest cover on the place. Had a heck of a time getting the group in the cover the next day to go after quail.

My vote goes to the tiger in Tiger King that gets Joe Exotic by the foot and won't let go.

Second goes to the D-9 Cat that John McPhee writes about in "Coming into the Country". The owner flies it in pieces into the Alaska bush, reassembles it there, and presses it into service for his gold prospecting operations.

Third place is the Siberian tiger Jonathan Vaillant writes about in "Tiger" who stalks and kills a man who is hunting him.

Fourth, the cougar, natch.

A couple life times ago I got to meet a Cheetah up close. She was the size of a big Great Dane. Liked to have her ears scratched, also one of the few big cats that purr if I remember right. Her keepers said that she just loved guys with beards and would lick my face. Yep, I leaned down and she licked my face, incredible sensation, listening to her purr while looking at those huge dog like claws. Sure glad she was a happy cat.

I'm kind of partial to mountain lions myself since we had one as a pet many years ago.

I worked in a mining camp for a summer back in the mid 70's and a few weeks before I arrived, an equipment salesman or some such made the mistake of parking his car behind the repair shop where they worked on those 35-ton ore trucks. Someone backed one out and, rear visibility being somewhat limited, when the salesman came out, the back half of his car was crushed flat. I'd love to have seen his face.

Meanwhile, these are two of my fav. big cats- Izzie and Charlie, my gf's two Norwegian forest cats, 23 and 21 lbs. respectively :)

Reminds me... in about the 8th grade, I asked a new student from Brazil how to pronounce the name for the jaguar where he came from.

He managed a mangled version of the English "jaguar." Turned out he meant the car, not El Tigre, which is what I wanted.

I'd been reading,Tigrero! by Sasha Siemel. This is board related, as he used Smith & Wesson .44's as well as a Winchester M-92 and his famed spears.

That is because el tigre is not the name of the jaguar in Brazil. The right name is onça-pintada, onça for short.

Edit. Almost forgot. My favorite big cat is the tiger. Which is called tigre both in Portuguese and Spanish.:D

Long ago, the circus animal trainer Gunther Gebel-Williams introduced me to the Bengal Tiger. Ever since, I've thought it was the most magnificent of cats.
