Your First Lunch Box

I’m pretty sure it was a Lone Ranger lunch box, at least that’s the one I remember the best. It’s probably somewhere in the attic. I remember that picking out a new lunch box was about the only part of a new school year that I looked forward too. Do kids still use lunch boxes these days?

I had this one when I was 5 years old. Only metal lunch box that I ever owned. Everything after that was wax paper wrapped sandwiches in a brown paper sack.

Brown paper bag with my name written on it. Take it home every day so it can be used again, and again. Fail to bring it home, suffer the consequences.

Seems like such a small thing in comparison to so many other lessons I have had to learn, but it was a small step taken on the road to responsible living. THIS IS YOUR LUNCH BAG! DON'T COME HOME WITHOUT IT!

Yes, Mom. I promise.

Mine was a brown paper bag. It nearly always contained a piece of fruit, a bag of Frito's corn chips and a sandwich made with mom's home made heavy whole wheat bread, PBJ, tuna, egg salad, peanut butter and banana, peanut butter and home made pickles or left over meat from the prior evening dinner. I was the only one who did not trade sandwiches because all the other kids brought store bought bread and almost all of it was white bread. My bread looked bad to them and theirs looked bad to me. I still like Frito's but they're not the best thing for my waist line.

Mine was rectangular sheet metal with a removable (not hinged) lid with two metal handles in the manner of a picnic basket. It was tan and had either one or two red stripes running around it. It had a small (maybe one pint) matching color theme thermos bottle with a red plastic cap/cup. There was no cafeteria (or any other food service) at my grade schools (2 of them) through the 7th grade. Then I went to Jr. High which did have a cafeteria and I took my lunch no longer.

I started 1st grade in 58, and don't remember names on lunch box. It was zoo scenes, lions, bears and mostly I remember the monkeys on the thermos bottle. Wow! Sixty-one years ago. Mikey

That could have mine......

Here was mine. Wish I still had it. of course I beat the the heck of of it just like the other boys. :D

I never had lunchbox but that one was about right and would have worked for me. Or 'The Man From U.N.C.L.E.'

Did they make an Avengers lunch box? I would have loved to have lunch with Emma Peel every day.

Brown vinyl, no picture when I was about seven.
I ditched the Thermos, more room in the box for my "stuff".
Can't imagine a kid today carrying a closed container onto school grounds today.

I don't recall ever having a Lunch Box - guess I was a deprived child. :D :D

I simply Brown Bagged it and did not have to carry around an empty box after lunch. :) Sometimes (on certain days when they served my favorite) I'd buy a "Hot Lunch" in the cafeteria. The Chow Mien was great! I was also fond of the Ice Cream Sandwiches! :D

First day of second grade, the teacher asked who brought their lunch. I raise my hand, and she said to bring it up front so she could twist the top of it.

I said, "Ma'am?"

she said to bring my lunch up to the front of the class, and she would twist the top of the sack to keep the ants out.

I held this up.

Great way to start the school year. Make the teacher look stupid.

Guess I used a paper sack in first grade, because I don't remember a box.

I had the good old black dome-topped lunchbox for grade school. Then starting with 6th grade the school served lunch in a cafeteria. But when I had summer jobs during college and professional school I got out the old lunchbox and customized it with a Batsignal sticker. I still have it.

The first one I remember was red plaid with matching thermos, of course. I had several different ones in elementary school as Mom bought us new ones every year. I had a Bonanza one, a Charlie Brown one, and one that depicted Major Matt Mason - a popular astronaut themed toy in the 60s.
