OK, I'll try this.

The gun with both the most carry hours on it and the highest round count would be my 6" 629. It doesn't currently get carried and not shot much either. It's kind of tired.

Second place would be my 669. It looks it.

Third place for round count would be my 6" 686 but not carry hours although it has quite a few.

Third place for carry hours, and a bunch of them, I'll call a tie (sorry but they're not a Smiths). They would be my Glock 23 and my Kel-tec Pf9. The Pf9 doesn't have a large round count but the G23 has quite a few. But they've both been largely replaced by:

The gun I carry most currently, by far, my Shield 9. Sorry, it's not a revolver.

If I'm working in the bushes and woods on my lot it's my old model 60 loaded with shot. However it hasn't been a heavily carried gun since I got my 669 back when they first came out.

I do plan to carry my 69 more. I am currently qualified with it.

I have put a lot of rounds through my 17 but it doesn't have any real carry hours.

I'm sort of blown away by some of the revolvers in this thread.

What was that I saw a 642 that is Nickel? Or what. Can you put a high polish on a 642? I think I saw a 60 on the last page that looked like it was super high polish too. Or maybe another thread....

An N frame that someone carries with a matte blued cylinder and a stainless frame? Or AL, not really sure which. That wonderful chiefs that is parked with the trigger guard relief.

A square butt 36 that looks like it has been putting the hurt on something for a long time. Love them square butt J's.....

I meeeeaaaaaaannnnn, there is some seriously good stuff in here. And interesting.

I have a few thousand dry fires plus who knows how many rounds that smoothed the actions. I like shooting them more than my 36 which has less trigger time. My 37 is pretty good also. The 442s get more use so they are a bit more smooth. None have been made lighter.

Are you saying you actually prefer shooting the lighter framed 437 over a steel framed 36? You have to fill me in on how that can be. I would think a Steel framed gun would be a more enjoyable experience. I actually don't have a steel j frame but always feel like I want one.

With the Hogue or Pachmayr Grips I would rather shoot my 442s. The light weight doesn't bother me with good grips. My 36 is a 1981. It has the nerrow trigger and front sight. The newer 442 has a wider trigger and bigger front sight.

Aaaaaaah! That makes total sense. I really like the feel of my trigger on the 442 also. It's smooth. I think I prefer it to the grooved one on my Model 19. The grooved one on my Colt DS is not comfortable to me.

I think that's the neatest custom I have ever seen. Too nice to carry.

What gold coin is inlaid in the grips and who did it for you? Very nice.

Thanks. Not too nice to carry. It's great! The only problem is nobody else ever sees it when I cc!

It's a $5 American Gold Eagle I bought in 2000, the year I retired from the Air Force.

Our very own "TheShootist1894" did the metal and refinish work on the Chiefs. A friend of Shootists redid the hammer and trigger's case hardening, and another friend of his etched my Chiefs' stripes on the side plate.

Craig Spegel made the grips and inlaid the Gold Eagle in them. As his request, I had a jeweler weld a gold post on the back to give Craig more than the coin's flat surface to glue into the grip.

A retired Navy Chief friend of mine calls it the ultimate vanity gun. Yeah, I guess.

Another forum member made the leather it rides in -- obviously before the Chiefs' redo.

You made it your own. And that is super cool.

A side note: I don't quite fully understand these holsters that expose the trigger. Would you mind explaining to me the reason or utility of this? I would think it would be wise to cover the trigger.....

I can't answer the implied "why" in your question, but it sure works well for me. I specifically asked the maker to modify his original proposal with as little leather as possible resting on the trigger guard. Before the barrel clears leather my finger tip is resting on the partially relieved front of the trigger guard. Perfect.

A maker might be able to offer the history and theory over on the "Gun Leather & Carry Gear" forum.

Your post reminded me of when I was an early 70's Detroit PD copper and my precinct guys would meet for a touch football game. POVs were parked too far from the field so out came the pieces, to be deposited on one spot on the sideline. Smith 27s, 25s, 57s, 58s, and 19s. All 4" or longer. That's what we carried in the Motor City, Murder Capitol of the US, before semi-autos.

Hi Cocked & Locked,

That photo sure appears to show a J Magnum Frame, and the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, 4th Edition, states the 642-1 was a 1996 re-introduction on the J Magnum Frame. Is it possible you were mislead somewhere along the line?

Nice gun, either way. :)

You make a fair point, Dave.

I have a March '97 J-magnum-frame 642-1 Lady Smith that, like Cocked & Locked's Centennial, isn't marked "+P." I've always wondered.

I've posted this gun before and with good reason. It is a Model 60 Ashland Shooting Supply one of 5000 that I purchased new in 1985. The adjustable sights are more an expression of style rather than purpose. I sighted it in and secured it with lock-title. As a backup to my Model 67, it looked and felt right. It was my shoulder holster backup and barbecue gun until I retired in 2011. A fixed sight air weight rode in the ankle holder during the warmer months. It went back to the factory once for a rebuild. Since retirement, it has been my lightweight carry gun, probably carried more than my Kimber 1911. At this age both guns are smooth as butter, reliable old friends.
I have the box, tools, paperwork, original receipts and the shotgun news advertisement for my model 60, but the carry wear excludes it from the collectors market.

Most carried currently... The M629-5 "Mountain Back-Packer"... For street and neighborhood walks and errands, loaded with 200 grain Federal semi-wad HP's or Speer/CCI, aluminum cased & topped with 200grain Gold Dot HP's. For woods carry 305grain Underwood .44Mags or Prvi Partizan 300grain semi-jacketed lead flat points. These two loads the "MBP" loves and I'm very comfortable with the recoil, repeatable accuracy, and performance.

For Woods Carry I always pack in addition to the .44 "MBP", my 70's "J" frame stoked with 150grain Hard Cast Full-Wadcutters in my front right pocket w/Nemesis holster.

"MBP"

"J" frame(s)... I carry the Nickel M36 most because of it's finish so easily wipes off dirt, grit, sweat, grime, and resists rust very well.
