I recently purchased a 7.5" stainless 500 mag(last feb)
I've found its consistent and accurate , with the lee 440 grain gas check cast bullet and 20 grains of blue dot powder and I've used it to take a couple hogs

Id love to install a small dependable red dot or lazer sight
(not a bulky scope) as my eyes at 73 years old are not as good as they were when younger,
off a rest I can shoot very impressive groups,
but obviously that's a whole lot easier than shooting the revolver with out a rest.
I've used a 10.5/8" 44 mag mod 29 for decades, so I'm rather familiar with handgun hunting
any tips or info on products to avoid would be helpful

I put a Leupold Delta Point on my 629-5 and very pleased with it. I have not shot it enough to report on dependable. There are several other good ones produced that are less expensive, and I am sure other users will report in soon.

The Ultra Dot red dots will hold up on the 500 just fine.

On my firearms I have a pair of RMRcc's, a CT1500, and a Romeo1Pro (I also have a cheap Pinty on a Browning Buck Mark but would not recommend it for your use.) Have to admit to being kind of a Trijicon fanboy, but every one of their products I own perform more than good enough, and are incredibly reliable, to the point I'm confident enough to have the the RMRcc as the only sight on my EDC's.

Astigmatism is something you should be aware of with red dots.
Recent cataract surgery and a few complications, but all is well now.

I ran my 3.5" 460 with a Trijicon RMR 3.25 with medium loads without issues. The OEM irons are back on now.

The Leupold DPP is on the bigger 460 and the mount I made can fit the RMR as well. Just roughed one out. Have not been to the range yet, grip work is not completed, but will see how the red dots hold up to the heavy loads shortly.

The Blue grips are now Green, modified a bit, and getting closer to fitting my hands.
Blue in Green. Great tune.

The Pros will chime in.

Enjoy that Blaster and the dinners it provides. :D

I don't have an answer, only a warning.

You'd better be prepared to pay for high end equipment. Hopefully you can get what will last.

I had a Bushnell TRS 25 that the company said withstood the heaviest 12 ga magnums.

Three medium heavy rounds with my 500 Mag completely destroyed the sight. Objective lens looked like a bloated frog eye, sitting 45 degrees from normal. Don

A heavy recoil handgun is the ultimate test for any scope. If it can survive that, mounting on a long gun is a sure thing. The Burris Fastfire 4 looks pretty good, but I don't know if it will hold up to a 500. You could call Burris and ask them.

For a laser, the green ones are a lot better in daytime than red, but can still be hard to see in some daylight conditions. They are great for low light or dark, though.

I don't own a .500, but will pass on a couple thoughts. Make sure whatever you buy has a solid no BS lifetime warranty. Leupold and Vortex come to mind, though I am sure there are others. Many brands with lifetime warranties you had better read the fine print - original owner only, need original sales receipt, abuse is not covered, ect.

I have seen more than a couple of sandbox videos with Aimpoint red dots mounted on .50 cal machine guns - I would think that is a good durability test.

I have been happy with my Vortex, Ultra Dot, and Burris red dots mounted on my .44's and .45's.

I've been running an Aimpoint H2. on my 500.

No issues.

Talking with Aimpoint before the purchase, the rep said that their product is up to the challenge. The rail adapter may not be. Thread locker is your friend.
