Has anyone noticed the cell phone zombies? Yesterday I was going through town and I saw 2 young men walking toward the intersection of a street that crosses a through street. I'm only going about 20 mph. and sure they would stop, but I noticed they were both looking, and probably texting, or looking at pictures or whatever, and steped out in front of my truck. I slammed the brakes and we all stopped and looked at each other. I really don't think those guys knew exactly where they were. Maybe they are more used to doing that while they are driving. I have also noticed some folks walking through the parking lot of the was-mart here, with a distant look in their eyes causing drivers to swerve or stop suddenly to keep from hitting them. I hate it when they do that then look at you like YOU should pay more attention.

I have seen this a lot. Also folks just walking in front of my truck. While driving my class A rv in a small town doing maby 20 mph, a kid, maby 8 or 9 left the curb in front of a tall truck (taller than he was) and stepped out in front of me. He never looked. People think they have the right of way, always.

Darwin at work, unfortunate for their parents but from what I see “killed while texting” is going to become a common epitaph. It is a good thing that there is no vehicular traffic inside malls, or the country would be depopulated.

When I was a kid many years we didnt even have a phone in the house! How did we get by? A few days ago I looked over at a middle aged couple driveing next to me. Both were on cell phones!
I will say you can see our local cops, (usualy the younger ones) around here also driveing and talking on the cell phones. I guess I need to get out more. While we have a cell phone I bet I dont use it twice a month. The wife less than that! It doesnt even work where we live due to the terrain. But I do like to carry it on trips.

Do not, I repeat, do not shoot dazed and confused cell phone zombies in the head. That is for actual zombies only and may, I repeat, may be an arrestable offense. Just wanted to make that clear.

I will say you can see our local cops, (usually the younger ones) around here also driving and talking on the cell phones.

I am actually writing a cell phone policy for the department P&P manual because of this.

they are without a doubt, getting creamed in the act of pushing buttons on an electronic device.
makes the death related to excessive speed, horsepower and testosterone coupled to a shortfall of sense, really seem a proud and worthy demise.

We have lots of them in and around Louisville. Normally harmless unless they step in front of you and cause bodily damage to your vehicle

I see Crackberry Zombies all the time at work, they walk down the halls not looking where they go and quite often end up running face first into a door or wall.

I'm in the public everyday and see everything talked about here.
I would like to know how many are truly injured by not paying attention while yacking and texting.I'd bet the numbers are sky high.

Looks like cell phones and texting have become a adult 'pacifier' for this generation. I find the radio much more interesting, or even just thinking. Imagine!

I find myself driving through lots of college towns. If they are not yakking on the phone and not paying attention to traffic, they have the Ipod wires stuck in their ears and are not paying attention. Either way, they seem to be drawn to walking out in front of moving traffic!

My favorites are those that see you, look you right in the eye, and step out in front of you anyway. They know you have to stop, so courtesy (and safety) becomes non-existent.

Frequently, I am required to drive one of these thru the Purdue University campus; as it is a mandated truck route.

Now one would certainly think that a nearly 30ton drilling rig bearing down on you might garner your attention. Right? Apparently not while texting, talking on a cell phone or jamming along with your iPod!!!

And no . . . I don't wake 'em up with the air horns . . . as tempting as it always is ! ! ! <grin>

Thanks D.G., but it's not one of ours . . . just an example of the size and make of rig that we have to play "Dodge the College Kiddies" with! <grin>

As with most all off-road heavy construction equipment, they only look THAT nice the day you take delivery!!!

As a side note, I well remember my days of being more than a bit distracted while walking across campus and that was long before cell phones and iPods! <smile,wink,smile,wink!>
