I saw this as a kid and can't believe it was floating around out there. Writer George Plimpton get's a bit role in "Rio Lobo" in 1970. This has great behind the scenes look at him with Wayne, Howard Hawks, and many other familiar faces as he learns to ride, handle a gun, walk, and say his one line before gettin' killed. Stuntman/actor Dean Smith showing Plimpton how to shoot and ride stands out.

When I moved to Central Oregon in 1977 people were still talking about John Wayne's escapades while IN Central Oregon for the filming of Rooster Cogburn. There was a small tavern just outside of Bend I guess he really liked and was in almost nightly buying the house 'rounds' and generally raising hell! A couple years ago I had to stop by a customer's house near me to evaluate a problem with their new RV and the owners invited me in for a beer and I spotted a picture of John Wayne and Katherine Hepburn on his wall that was signed by them. I asked about it and he mentioned he got that as well as the rustic kitchen table they had from the owner of the house they rented to put John Wayne up in while he was staying in Central Oregon. Another cool thing is there is a place called 'Sugarpine Butte' near where I live and it is a steep butte with an array of antennas and repeaters for various radio functions. I often take a drive up it for some sightseeing and show people it and one day while watching the movie I realized one of the opening scenes was shot on the road up to the butte - it was the one in the beginning where the bad guys were riding down the hill single file. I never realized it until i saw the movie some time later and recognized it immediately! Supposedly the 'ruins' of the shack where Strother Martin ran his ferry business are still on the ground on the Deschutes River (again not far from where I live) but I have never tracked it down to go find it - heck I just might this summer!

I didn't know Pemberton wrote Paper Tiger. Sounds like the Duke liked to have a little fun on the set.

Towards the end he called him "Plankton", but Pimpleton was my favorite.

Happy New Year!

I could not let this mention of RIO LOBO pass without sharing my pride and joy. I have owned other John Wayne pieces, but this, from his estate sale, is my favorite:

Wayne reused much of his film wardrobe for the last 15 years of his career, as it became his 'uniform' with just mixing and matching different color shirts. The RIO LOBO costume used his four pocket stockade jacket (worn in nine of last 11 films) khaki pants (this pair dating to EL DORADO) and a blue cavalry shirt stripped of the pockets and shoulder epaulets from THE UNDEFEATED. This costume was also worn in BIG JAKE (when Richard Boone first meets Wayne at the campfire with the 'bona fides') and the coat is the one used in TRUE GRIT to smoke out the bad guys at the cabin.

Our fire drills include the wife, the bird and this.
