New Update - S&W 628-4 Magnaport .44 Magnum?

My money is on a miss-stamped 629-4 PC gun. Of our vast membership and brain trust, who has seen or heard of a model 28/628 anything in 44 magnum? The gun’s been used but not abused and those are OEM Hogue grips. Like others here, I wouldn’t have left the store without it. Curious to know more.

We may never know...

Agree...it's a mistamped Model 629, dash ???. I believe that the only big bore snubbies made by S&W PC are the 627, 657, and 629 (and later 625), never a 628. Most if not all PC guns have the unfluted cylinders, although some S&W standard production snubby revolvers had fluted cylinders. The internal lock was introduced in 2001 with the 629-6, so it's before this. The SCSW 4th Ed. had no listing for s/n SPA0021. This does appear to be a 3" bbl and not a 2-5/8" bbl. There is a PC Production Code 170058 for a 629 3" Dual Magna Ported, unfluted; 148719 3" Magna Ported 1999; and 170279FC 629 3" Lou Horton Carry Comp 2006. FC is probably fluted cylinder, but it's after introduction of the IL. With all the LH variations and other PC models, who knows how this particular revolver came to be.

s&wchad- BTW, Clint's 627 in "Blood Work" had a fluted cylinder that is very similar to the OP's pictured 629. My 627-5 has an unfluted cylinder.

CobiaS&W- Would it be rude to ask how much the LGS wants for this revolver?

Yes, the 627-PC UDR (Ultimate Defense Revolver) that Clint used did have a fluted cylinder, but it also had the 2-5/8” slab-sided barrel. I never heard of a factory fluted UDR, so it was probably modified by the movie prop department. SmithNut added an 8 shot fluted cylinder to his and dressed it up with a fabulous set of checkered Spegel boot grips.

I left mine stock, but did put the factory supplied Eagle boot grips on.

There were also several engraved versions that were offered by the American Historical Foundation. They said only 400 of the standard versions would be made, but they lied. They're still producing a version of the gun.

Maybe, but usually not much, if any. Some sellers try to use the "rarity" to bump up the price.

Please don't spread that rumor. For the most part a mis-marked gun won't bring any more than any other gun.

If you want to talk about stamps, coins, and the like, then maybe, that holds true.

These guns are built by craftsmen (and women) and errors are easy to make, and likely DO NOT justify any increase in price. There are unscrupulous dealers that would love for you to believe these things, but they are just not true.

OP - Neat gun! I am curious to see what the whole story is. Usually, the PC guns are great shooters.

Great buy! A quick search on the product code pulled up this thread. Lew Horton PC 629-4

Given the non LMH serial and fluted cylinder, this could have been a 1 off employee gun or possibly a sample gun. Regardless, it’s definitely worth every penny you paid and then some. Smith should have made more of these with the 3” 44 mag “lady smith” lug profile, sans magnaport. Great now I have another stainless n frame to add to my lust list.

Cheers!

Called S&W Customer service.
Serial # is SPA0021
Product Code: 103601
Manufactured: 1995
4" Barrel
Instead of doing what I usually do (Procrastinate) ...I MADE THE PURCHASE
Friend sent information off to Roy Jinks.

Definitely not a 4" Barrel

I still think it’s a factory 3”. If you look at the link from post #19 on this thread, look at post #12. Clearly a 3” revolver with a 4” label. The barrel may be a little bigger then 3”??

Why yes, yes I did :)... Never got used to unfluted cylinders personally, so this one had to get changed..... I kept the unfluted cylinder so it's easy to put it back to original condition if I so choose to down the road.....

Great find at a great price

We may never know the true story of how this 629 came to be. The SCSW (Pages 308 and 310) and S&W Customer Service information don't seem to match- i.e. the barrel length of Product Code 103601 or production date. Sure looks like a 3" dual magna-ported barrel to me, not a 4". If it is indeed #21 of 30 from the 1995 short run, $1250 OTD was a great price! My only big bore snubby is a 627-5, unfluted, wearing Crimson Trace stocks...and yes, it is a great and accurate shooter. Enjoy your new .44 Magnum.

Checking the SCSW, product code 103601, 4" Lew Horton Special, 30 manufactured 1997.

All the product codes appear to be six digit. Might want to confirm.

Fixed the Product code #. This is the number S&W Customer service gave me when I talked to them yesterday. They also gave me a 1995 manufacture date. (Confirmed by Roy Jinks) The Barrel on my gun measures 3 3/8". Does S&W consider this to be 4"? The book is unable to specify the identify of serial # SPA (State Police of Alaska?) and for whatever reason does not list this exact gun.

It's far enough from 3 inches to not be listed as 3 inches, but too far from 4 inches to be listed as 4 inches. Under S&W's normal procedure for specs, it should be a 3 1/2 inch barrel, the shortest barrel length for an N-frame to have a full length ejector rod.

I’ll take it! Wait…

Love those Culinas, it makes that revolver.
