So while on the Great Smoky Mountain train ride out of Bryson City, NC earlier this week a passenger in our car asked the following question to the storyteller:

“What’s the vine that is growing everywhere”?

Of course I knew the answer (kudzu).

What I didn’t realize was that it is edible😳😳

So how many here have tried it?

I don’t believe I’ll be cooking up a batch anytime soon.

I seem to recall reading its planting was encouraged by the government during the dustbowl thirties to prevent erosion.

Didn't know it was edible. (Other than by goats who seem to like the stuff.)

I read an article a few years ago about a man who was using it to make an ethanol type fuel. Can't imagine that the economics of harvesting enough of it to do so made any sense.

I like most greens but kudzu is not one of those I will even think about trying. It grows everywhere around here but I'll still take a hard pass.

Well, people also claim Brussel sprouts are edible

And most delicious, if I say so myself!👍

I see plots of land around here completely covered in kudzu, I mean acres. In fact, about 15 years ago an acquaintance of mine bought a piece of property about 20 acres, and about a third was completely covered in kudzu, large trees and all. A couple of months later he sold it for a nice profit, and the new owner’s plan was to basically clear cut everything. Boy they were surprised to find a ranch style house, barn, 4 cars, and a tractor underneath the vines!
