For those of you who suffer, have you figured out what foods are your triggers? Some folks have discovered that gluten, or corn is at fault.
Or perhaps, like a quantity of something? IOW, sugar in your a/m coffee is okay, but an ice-cream cone is problematic.

It's now effecting my hands, and I am trying narrow the culprit/s.

Are you taking a statin? Statins can cause arthritis-like symptoms. I took Lipitor/atorvastatin for 15 years with no problems. After developing significant pain in my wrists and shoulders, my family nurse practitioner told me to stop taking it. The pain went away within two weeks. I switched to Crestor/rosuvastatin and have had no problems since.

Diets high in carbohydrates tend to be inflammatory. I’ve been on a low carb diet for 20 plus years. Stay away from the cheap carbs. Eat real food.

My wife and I started the "KETO" diet in 2018,,
the FIRST thing we both noticed was how much less pain we were suffering with.

On KETO, we stopped going out to dinner,, after 2 years,,we had lost enough weight.
Well, at the end of the 2 years, COVID started,,]
AGAIN,, we were not going out to dinner,

We are now at 5 years,, I am now in my early 70's,, the pain is still almost zero, compared to 2017.

It is almost impossible for us to go out to dinner, low quality food served, and loads of carbs,,,

It has been so long, we now enjoy our great new home food diet!!
Ribeyes,, almost EVERY day!! WOOT!!

Same here. We’ve taken it a bit further. We grow raise and hunt most of our food. What we do buy is mostly organic. Quit eating out. It’s ****.
This is what the wife and I are eating as I type. All but the bacon off our land.

Gluten is an inflammatory product found in many foods. The less you consume, the less inflammation you will have.

BINGO! I didn't know this. Come to think of it, I don't recall experiencing these flare-ups BEFORE starting it, like 6mos ago.

I am already very low-carb so far as what I term 'starch-ohydrates'. IOW, anything from grain. No cereals, oatmeal, breads, rice, pasta, etc. Gluten is prevalent in wheat, barley, rye and oats. My only exceptions are those in vegetables, and my beloved guord squashes are limited because of that. Onions are a big offender, also.

Gout is the only form of arthritis I have, so far. I'm 71 and have dealt with it periodically for nearly a quarter of a century. Early on my triggers were black beans, Lima beans, Navy beans, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts -- all things I loved.

Two years ago it got so bad I completely altered my diet. I stopped eating anything with a hoof and stopped drinking pale (yellow) beer. It made a huge difference, but I would still occasionally have a disabling attack in an ankle, knee, elbow or wrist. Steroids would calm the pain and reduce the swelling, but they also come with their own bad baggage.

Finally, about, a year ago I let my doc convince me to start on allopurinol to reduce the uric acid level in my body. It worked, and now I only get an attack if I eat too much of one of my triggers.

A blood test for uric acid will tell you if gout might be your problem.

I've been on a Keto diet for a couple years and it's like being in heaven. Once I lost all the weight I wanted, I stay on Keto but cheat on the weekends and eat desserts, Mexican food, Bar-B-Q, ice cream, whatever I want. I gain a few pounds but then I'm back on Keto after the weekend is over and loose that weight and cleanse my system. I never have cravings or feel like I'm starving and intermittent Keto keeps my system healthy and I'm able to play pickleball 10 hours a week with my fiancee along with the other active, fun things at 64. I will say, avoid sugar as much as you can, it is one of your biggest enemies. I try to buy everything sugar free and add liquid Stevia to give it the sweet taste I love.

Like Bob, I have gout. It visits me 3 or 4 times yearly.

As preventatives my PCP told me that both water and coffee lower uric acid levels which seems to work.

He also told me to cut way back on beer.

I have learned to live with gout.

Processed sugar. The fewer sweets I eat, the less pain I have. Which is tough, because I like my desserts.

Interesting. I do not remember which statin I was started on but it gave me really bad lower back pain and cramping issues in the big muscles of the legs. Once I was swapped over to Atorvastatin the pains went away, and it works a charm on my bad cholesterol levels

A few points to ponder:

All carbohydrates cause inflammation in the body. A terrific source of information is Dr. Ken Berry on youtube.

Foods that contain oxalates cause glass hard, crystal shaped structures to accumulate all over the body, and particularly in joints. 80-95% of kidney stones consist of calcium oxalate. They also prevent the absorption of calcium. There's a long list of common foods that contain this toxic substance, it would be quicker to look them up than for me to list them here. Sally Norton, also on youtube, is an expert on oxalates.

Statins: Recent studies show statins reduce the absolute risk of dying from a myocardial event by 0.4%, and from a stoke by 1.3%. This is a tiny amount of benefit for a drug which has many potentially serious side affects. Doctors will give you the relative benefits of a statin, which is around 38%. That sounds pretty good, but guess where they get that number from... the pharmaceutical companies. The ones making billions off dangerous meds that give you an actual 1.3% benefit at most. A quick google or youtube search can point you to this info. This info does not apply if you've already had an event. In that case a statin may have a higher absolute benefit.

Don't get me going on how every cell in your body needs cholesterol, and how your hormones are made from it. Or, that dietary cholesterol has no correlation to cholesterol in your bloodstream. The paradigm surrounding cholesterol is changing fast.

I am not in the medical profession, please don't take my word on these issues. Research it yourself :D

Dr. Berry and his lovely RN wife Neisha are on a mission to teach everyone how to fix their own health. They don't sell anything and they are absolute angels on earth. If I can convince just one person to take a look their information my job here is done :D

Best of luck in your search for relief!

I confess that I’m skeptical about inflammation caused by food.

I know it’s a widely used explanation for almost everything but I’ve not seen the research that supports this view.

Color me skeptical.

Yeah, me too.

On a related note: humans have been eating grains (gluten) since before the beginning of recorded history, but suddenly everyone and their brother has a "gluten sensitivity" issue?

Sorry, but something about that just doesn't add up or make sense to me.

Maybe I'm just too "thick" to get it?!?
