I found this Outdoorsman in a LGS. The really neat job of cutting the barrel back and the serious blue wear on both sides of the barrel made me think "law enforcement gun". But if that guess was correct what's with those huge target grips, I doubt you could even insert it into a holster with those grips.

I bought it, got it home, and removed the grips and found the 12-47 factory service date. I knew there was close to zero chance the factory letter would help me with an owner's name, but if the owner shipped it direct to the factory in 12-47 to have the barrel cut, I would have a name.

But, no luck. Don Mundell's letter states "38/44 Outdoorsman Transitional Model, ship 9/19/46 to Hopkins Sporting Goods, Des Moines, Iowa". Bill Cross deep dive search showed no information on the 12.47 factory service.

I still like it, and it loves my handloaded 38 special plus P's.P7091073.jpg

I like the way this gun was modified, also I too believe it was a former LEO gun evidenced by the amount of holster wear on the barrel and cylinder. As far as the target grips are concerned maybe the former owner had a big hand and preferred the fit of the oversized grips and learned to adapt to it in his holster.
Last, I don't see a target shooter cutting down the barrel and the gun having that kind of holster wear for a range gun.

I too LOVE your gun. That one may even make a great candidate for an engraving project...:) If you ever tire of it, it would be more than welcome in my safe and I'd be more than happy to trade you a similarly worn "full-sized" Transitional O/D.:D

This cut pre-war OD is one of my favorites...

Thanks for sharing,

Very nice and interesting S&W,
The barrel almost looks like it's closer to 3.5" judging only by the distance from muzzle to ejector rod shroud front.
Early post war low serial with the long action hammer and barrel end ejector rod tip.
I have one about 1 or 2 years newer that is fit with a pre war 4" Reg Mag barrel,
love the look of shorter barrels on the .38/44.

Will it chamber a .357 Magnum round? It may also have had its chambers reamed.

38/44

I liked bald1 suggestion for some elk stocks, so here's a set from bigmtnman that i purchased to go on a 3.5" pre-27. Might have to buy another set.

It is still chambered for 38/44, chambers have not been lengthened.

And here's pic of target stock interior

jimmyj- I now have 4 38/44's. Two pre-war and 2 post-war. I'm still on crutches from a torn ligament in my knee, but give me three more weeks and I'll get all 4 of them out to the range and give you a comparison

I think it was 2002 at a meeting in Las Vegas when I bought my 2nd prewar OD 38/44 from Monte Mandarino and I was discussing these beautiful revolvers with our late friend Ray Cheely and I told him at the time that this was my 2nd prewar OD.

I told him then:

"you can never have enough outdoorsmen"

I now have four prewar OD 38/44 all with 6.5" barrels
+ (3 blue picture boxes)

and a transition model (Gary Garbrecht) and a post 1950 revolver in my collection.

I also had a 5th prewar OD 38/44, unfortunately I gave this gun to a collector friend, which I still regret today.

My wish would of course be an OD prewar in 5",
but this wish will not come true for me in Germany

All revolvers are in 98/99 % condition

Paul from Germany
