What .357 Hollow Point (factory load) do you like best out of a 3" barrel? I am thinking 158 grains at this point.

I have been looking at Speer and Federal so far.

I would opt for the .357 Speer Short Barrel load for defense.

Glad to see you are no longer provoking the Forum members by washing your guns in salt water :) . Have a good weekend.

I like the good old Winchester 145 grain Silvertip. Its what I have loaded in my 2 3/4 inch Speed Six.

As far as stopping power, I'll place my bet (and actually have, this is the load that's in my 2 1/4" Taurus 605/weak side front pocket as I type) on R357M1 (Remington 125 gr. SJHP), or it's Remington UMC equivalent, but only if the shooter/gun team have the ability to place it as well as lighter loads and can handle the fierce muzzle blast and recoil.

The other posters have made excellent suggestions as well. The best way to find out which suits your needs best is to try them all and see what works best for you and your gun.

158 gr. ammo is generally a little bit of an overpenetrator and more for hunting I would think. It certainly ought to work well though. So if you prefer super deep penetration or have fixed sights and 158s are what shoot to POA, then 158s would be a logical choice.

+1 What murphydog said I carry those in my 3 inch Sp 101 no big muzzel flash and quite controlable.

Buffalo Bore tactical low flash 357 Mag 158. One shot stopper to a man under 200 pounds hit center of mass. Easy shootin out of L frame and not bad out of K.

Assuming we are talking about defensive use, almost any 125gr-158gr name brand JHP will work.

The Spper SB load might be a good idea, as would the Cor Bon DPX.

My favorite factory .357 Magnum load is 145gr Winchester Silvertip ammo. I use it in 2" and 4" barrel revolvers with good success. I find it to be very accurate ammo in my revolvers.

With over penetration from a .357 being a concern for me in an urban setting, I also prefer the Speer 135 gr Gold Dot short barrel load.

My 3" model 13 shoots either the 135gr or 158gr Gold Dots well.
135gr SB for town, 158gr for woods walking!

If you're referring to self-defense ammo, the traditional .357 Magnum 125 JHP has a long-standing reputation as the best fight-stopper of all time for any caliber handgun. While it loses a bit of velocity in shorter barrels, it retains enough speed to get the job done. The Federal load with the huge hollow point and the Remington load with the scalloped jacket were cited in the Marshall-Sanow studies as being tied for top loads. Expect a pretty prominent muzzle blast.

The CorBon 110 gr JHP was recommended for the .357 Magnum in Ed Lovette's book on snubnose revolvers. Lovette favored it due to less muzzle blast and recoil with short barreled handguns.

The Gold Dot short barrel ammo is a relatively new development. The 135 gr Gold Dot has worked well in .38 Special +P and appears to be popular in .357 Magnum as well.

Personally, I would go with any of these loads for self-defense and not worry about my ammo.

Almost any name brand .357mag JHP between 110gr and 158gr mushrooms well enough that overpenetration, if you hit the bad guy solid, is not an issue.

A common and easy to get load .357mag that is low penetration and low recoil is the 110gr Winchester loading that they sell in their white box line.

I used to carry this in my 640 when I used it for a BUG.

Salt water washdown is the only way we here at S&WFTC clean our revolvers. All traces of oils, fingerprints and chemicals are removed and metal is ultra clean. Just let dry before holstering in Leather ( if plastic holster, can place right in )
