Hello all, I am new to the world of hand guns. I just bought a model 67 - 38 special and don't have a clue as to what kind of ammunition to buy for target shooting as well as home defence. I have a relative in law enforcement who looked at the gun, purchased from an estate, and he doesn't think the gun has ever been fired. If so he says very few times.
Thanks ...Bob

Ammunition for Model 67

This revolver, if in good condition (as you say it is) will handle any .38 Special or .38 Special +P load.
In my opinion...
For target use, the 158 grain lead round nose works fine as well as the 148 grain wadcutters. Winchester sells the 130 grain full metal jacket (FMJ) load and it will serve as a plinker load but may not give the best accuracy.
For defense, I use a 158 grain lead semi-wadcutter hollow point (LSWCHP). This is a "+P" load, which means it's loaded to a slightly higher pressure than standard loads. It is known as the "FBI Load" or the "Chicago Load" and it is (or was) made by all of the major ammunition manufacturers. It's not the high-tech load of the week, but it'll do the job as well as any .38 load.

You have a very nice revolver there!

You didn't say how long the barrel is. If it is less than 4", Speer has developed a load for short barrel .38's, and others. It is the 135gr SB Gold Dot plus P. That is what I currently carry in my 3" M686. It is quite popular, and was developed for New York City Police Officers who carry snub nose revolvers. I get it at my local gun shop. You can also Google on Buffalo Bore Ammo and get a lot of info. They sell the "FBI load" referred to in the previous post. I reload my range ammo. I use a 158gr copper plated bullet and Universal powder. Reloading can be another great hobby.

For the most part, any current self defense ammo from a name brand manufacturer will do a good job for you. Find an ammo that shoots accurately in your revolver and stick with that ammo. The best ammo in the world will do you no good unless you hit what you aim at. Accuracy is very important...

Welcome to the forum!

Uncle, I shoot 158 grain bullets in my 67. This is what the gun was designed for. (that does not mean you can't use others)
Walmart sells Federal 158 gr. lead round nose, about cheap as you can find.
I shoot lead bullets in .38's, and jacketed or plated in semi autos.
Down the road, if you shoot alot, you can get into reloading. You can get your ammo exactly as you like it, and save money at the same time.
Welcome to the Forum, and the 67 is a great Smith to start with! Bob

I have been shooting Georgia Arms 158 rounds at the gun range and keep the Federal 158 grain Personal Defense stuff in the night stand and my CC guns. GA will UPS ship, or go to a gun show, I have had very few miss fires with there stuff.

Federal American Eagle 130 grain FMJ - not expensive and does the trick as a range load.

Thanks for all the replies. Yes it is the 4" model. I went to a gun show today and found ammo prices varied quite a bit. Untill I get a feel for this gun I'll probably go with the cheap Winchester stuff from Walmart.
Thanks...Bob

For target shooting, informal plinking and all around fun, any standard velocity RNL or SWC bullet in 158 grain weight will do the trick and more than likely be the most accurate in you M67.

For serious defense work, I like the Buffalo Bore 158 grain (HEAVY) LSWCHP-GC +P ammo (simply the best there is - IMHO). If you are sensitive to recoil, you can also use the standard pressure NON +P version of the same BB bullet.
