Monarch Steel Case
Alright I'm brand new here and this is my first post so here is the question. Is the Russian Monarch steel cased ammo any good? I was at Academy the other day and they had a whole stack of this stuff in 9mm 115 FMJ which is what I practice with and it was dirt cheap like $10.99 for a 50 round box but I'm very leary of some of the Russian steel cased stuff. I've heard that some of it has a steel jacket with a copper wash to make it look like standard ammo. As I said I don't know and I'm sure someone on here does so any insight would be greatly appreciated. I've got a brand new Shield that I love and would be really upset it I broke my stuff with **** ammo.

I don't care for steel cased ammo in general.
A few gun manufacturers actually recommend against it, but not all.
Having said that, Euro guns (Glock, XD, Beretta, etc) are made to run steel cased ammo.
I've tried Monarch, and it ran okay, but seemed dirtier than my usual favorites.
If it's all you can find, go ahead, but I'd rather spend a couple extra bucks on Federal or WWB from WalMart.

It's OK for range. It's not a steel steel jacket. The steel case is soft steel it's not like tool steel. Most guns run fine with it and Hornady even makes steel case ammo. I use steel case almost exclusively in ALL my guns for years and years and have only had 2-3 problems, 1/2 being due to hard primers needing a second strike
Monarch itself is just a name and many manufacturers have sold under it. I have some brass cased 303 brit ammo made by PPU and sold under Monarch
To me it's a sign of durability. If a handgun can only handle the gentlest of ammo then it's no good for SD

Thanks I think I'm just gonna go ahead and get a couple boxes just to try it and if it doesn't work well them I'm only out 20 bucks. I was mainly worried about it having steel jackets on the projectile and damaging the rifling. Thanks for the advice.

Just try some. If it doesn't work someone will take them off your hands

I don't know about the handgun rounds, but the rifle rounds have a bi-metal projectile... it is a steel projectile with copper plating. It will stick to a magnet. It is said to wear a barrel out quicker...
I still shoot it. With the money saved on ammo, I can more than afford a new barrel if I shoot one out.
