What Steel case ammo DOES NOT have steel core?
Hello everyone, I am new to hand guns / ammunition / and being a part of a forum. I have done hours of research on misc. things about guns to buy, ammo to buy, cleaning ect. I just found out there are 2 gun ranges near my house that allow me to use steel cased ammo! HELLO CASH BACK IN MY POCKET! So I called them to find out what the rule is on it. They simply told me it can not have a steel core / or be aluminum. I asked if he knew of any ammo that is safe steel ammo to bring and he told me I would have to look it up. Well.... it wasn't that easy but I found tiny bits of info but not enough that I would like. If you guys know of Brands of 9mm steel case ammo with no steel core I would appreciate it if you could give me a list!
I am a poor full time working / college student that loves to pinch pennies.
(I don't care that I want to run steel case, I clean my gun after every use at the range, I plan on USING my gun and not having it in a case just for looks and last for ever. I will repair/ replace things that go bad or wrong. I have read all roomers/ bad/ good/ great things on steel case bullets.)

Welcome to the forum.
I'll pass on your question and let the more knowledgeable answer. The range I belong to will not allow anything with a steel case but they're ok with aluminum.

Is he meaning no steel case or aluminum case? Or did he say steel or aluminum core? If that's the case most projectiles are brass wound around lead. I've also gotta ask what caliber ammo are you using? And how much you spend on ammo or plan to.

I think that a prohibition on importation of steel-cored bullet ammunition was imposed some years ago, as it is considered by the Feds to be armor piercing.

If you can spend about 50 cents more just buy from freedom munitions. It's cheap and it's good. Like I said most ammo isn't steel cored, I know wolf has a steel jacket on some of their stuff not sure what one though. Hope that helps a bit.

There is NO handgun ammo, steel cased or otherwise, with steel cored bullets that can be sold on the commercial market. Steel cored bullets are considered armor piercing and illegal under federal law and some state laws.
Where people get confused is when they stick a magnet to a bullet and it sticks to the gilding metal steel clad jacket and think it's steel cored.

From what I have read there is a very rare chance a steel cased bullet comes with a steel core. A steel core is Armor piercing. I just bought some Tulammo steel cased ammo with lead core. All im asking if anyone knows of other brands that do this. The jacket may be steel coated but the core must be lead.

Exactly a bullet may be magnetized and steel jacket, brass jacket, lead core, or steel core. So its safe to say any steel cased ammo (steel jacket or brass jacket) will not have a steel core since it is illegal?

Pretty much all ammo in the US is lead cored.

I have found that most online retailers sell range safe 9mm at about 200 dollars per 1000 plus shipping. SGAMMO has a good selection most of the time. I've also noticed my local Walmarts have started carrying aluminum cased federal 115gn 100 round bulk packs for $19.44 plus tax.
This ammo runs great in my 39 series guns, Beretta 92, and CZ Scorpion Evo.

Also, when FN first came out with the 5.7 there was some AP imported as well, labeled GOV USE ONLY. That one I know for a fact.

Yes, at one time it was legal to import, manufacture and sell AP handgun ammo in the U.S. Post-WWII Czech 9mm was imported primarily by Interarms but has now been banned specifically by name and dates of manufacture along with WWII German sE (sintered Eisenkern or sintered iron), and mE (mit Eisenkern or with iron core).
I'm not sure exactly what date AP handgun ammo became banned under federal law but by that time Interarms had imported a lot of the Czech 9mm ammo. The Sellier & Bellot 32ACP ammo with the steel core was also imported before the federal law went in effect.

I would surmise the OP is making reference to: bimetal bullets not, steel core! "Bimetal" is often confused with "steel core".
The bullets are lead-cored, but steel jacketed, with a very thin copper coating over the steel. So, the term bimetal refers only to the jacket and not the bullet as a whole. Many indoor ranges prohibit their use because they spark when thet hit the concrete backstop. This could ignite unburned powder and cause a fire!

Bet a dollar to a donut, the actual policy will be "No steel or aluminum case ammo. No ammo with steel or 'bimetal' jacket."

I am in complete agreement with you! The confusion is probably with the communications between the OP and the range rep!
