What's up with gun stores and ammo ?????

The local Sportsman's Warehouse has moved the ammo behind the counter, mainly due to theft I think. I generally purchase my ammo online, and I suggest that as the best option to get what you want at a decent price.

My local Sportsman Warehouse have so much ammo they have been moving stock off shelves just to stock it. The only thing behind the counter with guns are primers.

I don't buy/use much SD ammo but it is available. This is the last purchase (03/2024) while I had "ammo+" with Target Sports. They still have plenty (shows "99+" in stock right now). Joe

Yeah that's what I am being forced to do.....Luckly Natchez has Federal HST JHP 9mm in stock....Brownell's is Out of Stock.....
With my luck somebody At FedEx will carry my package to their house!!!!!!!!!

From what I see at Natchez, that HST is $1.49 per round. $27 per box of 20. Same ammo is selling at multiple places for 48 cents per round. Ammoseek.com is your friend. Very first listing for Federal HST shows $485 for 1000 PLUS free shipping.

I buy cheapest ammo possible.
Why spend any more when you will never see the round again after it’s fired?
It’ll make a hole in paper and it’ll shoot a bottle etc.
For hunting I get the need for specific and quality ammo, but for targets and plinking, I wouldn’t think it makes a diff.
Thoughts?
I’m a newbie to all this and all ears.
Thanks

My post is in regards to self defense ammo for everyday concealed carry...yes cheap plinking ammo is fine for the range, but in my carry gun I want higher rated stopping power.

Go to SG Ammo for 9mm HST. It's LE-packaged in 50 round boxes, not the 20 round "specialty" package. Price per round is far better than 20 rounders from Natchez or Brownells. If you spend $200, you get free shipping. Great company to deal with. Fast shipping, well packed and just some darn nice folks.

Krogen, my personal experience is a bit different.. I used to buy from sgammo for many years without problem and I was a repeat happy customer. Then out of the blue late in 2023 they started asking for an upload of my driver's license because of WA state. All other online stores have a simple prompt asking if you are over 18 years old. Sgammo is the only one with the 'upload copy of your id to let you buy ammo from us' thing. Did they skip the ID part for you, or simply you did not mind to give it to them? My problem is not showing it to them, is not knowing where it'll leak from their server, IDs containing a lot of personally identifiable data.

I encountered the same thing with SG Ammo as you did. I didn't sweat uploading my driver's license. I don't think the number is terribly useful to identity thieves should there be a breach; especially compared to other documents.

It's true other online vendors haven't gone as far. They just expect a declaration of adult age. Scheel's was the exception. They went further yet and demanded ID.ME credentials. Already having an account, I provided the info. Then they decided they just wouldn't sell ammo or reloading components to WA residents at all. We have no law prohibiting those sales, but I got nowhere arguing with them. It was a waste of my time and breath. The result is they won't see another nickel from me for anything, let alone ammo or components.

I understand your concern, but given that the Chinese have already been through the OPM and Social Security databases, that horse is long gone from the barn.

That was going on around here during the last ammo shortage. No more. But too bad for the dealers, I'm buying mostly by the case now. Mail order is your friend, if you live In a free state.
Hazardous shipping cost added to ammo costs about don't make it worth my while to order much ammo off-line except believe it or not, from bass pro. The online orders from bass pro are less because of additional taxes in store .. but there's a few stores where it's cheaper to drive to an just get what I need.

I think your on the right track, you say your a newbie to it all.. cheapest in my opinion is good to break the firearm in, an to get range time. If you can hit a pie plate your in the ball park. But for self defense, use some of the ammo you would use. You should run a few to see where your hitting an if it functions in your firearm.
Small example, I used an LCP cheap 380 ball ammo.. worked fine, found some 380 "light recoil" had a Rubber like filling in the hollow point cavity supposed to I think help with expansion or something. That ammo failed to eject properly an that lead to other issues. Was dangerous to carry that ammo if there was a Situation an I needed the LCP. So testing the "SD Use" ammo is always a good idea to do.

Maybe this helps you, maybe it don't. Thanks for reading.

There is no hazmat charge on ammo. Powder and primers, yes, but not ammo. Not sure where you're coming from . . . . There are far better prices online than in most brick & mortar stores.

I get that… but surely for this you only need one box of 20 you whole life?

Your carry guns must without failure handle any self-defense cartridge you're going to carry so yes I need to put these rounds down range just to ensure proper functionality with different brands. It is a necessary and wasteful expense but you better be sure your weapons can handle any rounds are going to carry

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^That right there^^^^^^^

Typical range session with my carry/defense guns includes shooting up the carry ammo onboard, then at least 50 rounds of practice stuff, light clean and lube, then reload with defensive ammo, fire 2-3 rounds to verify function, top off mags and done.

I have been away from bullet shooting for years. Just now heading back to it. If the listed loads above are this box of 20 @ 2.00 a round stuff, it would be OK with me if they hide it. I know to each his own, but I am just a plain Jane hardball/ SWC type guy:D
I am not quite that, but I could easily learn it if necessary. Fortunately, present age of 80 indicates that lifetime supply is a fairly modest stash.

The opportunity is there....

Price gougers and other opportunists have done much to destroy our shooting hobby.

This didn't happen much in my memory because if somebody didn't have it, or wanted to high a price, there was plenty of other places that had plenty or were more reasonable. With practically everything being in short supply, gouging is now a profitable way to do business.

1. Reliability (see the thread on Ammo you won't buy)

2. Depends what you mean by plinking and target shooting.

Every time I go to the range I'm trying to accomplish something. As I increased distances from 10' to 10 yards to 17 and 25 yards, ammo choices more noticbly change the point of impact, and to a lesser extent, group size. The latter is usually just me, the former is usually the ammo-pistol combo. The better you get, the more you will see this.
For targets, the NRA Basic Pistol qual. targets are good for close distances. The B-8 target is good for 10 to 25 yards, although the size of the bullseye is intended for 25 yds. There is a 50' pistol target if you want a more appropriate size bull for 10 to 17 yds.
