Was browsing ammo at Dicks today and saw some 38's for $20.99. Last box I bought was $24.95 at my LGS, so this seemed to be a good buy. It gets better. When I checked out the clerk said "that will be $18 sir". WHAT ? Turns out there was a sale and I ended up paying $16.99 before tax,,, not too bad. Might go back tomorrow and buy a pallet.
 
That is a good price. Funny what we consider a good price these days isn't it? Gas at $2.30 a gallon is a good price? I remember when I was paying $.90 a gallon I thought I was getting the hose shoved other than in my gas tank.

The cost of .38 was why I started reloading a few years ago. I can load 100 .38 rounds for 26 bucks. Even at the very good price you paid, which is not the normal price, that's 36 bucks vs 26 bucks. Walmart charges 23.99 for a box of 50 near me. So $50 for a 100 rounds vs $13 for my reloads.

If you have a Cabela's near you, and can get one of their credit cards, there are good prices on 158gr .38spl and .357mag. Credit card holders sometimes get 20 percent discount codes that can be stacked with sale prices.

Here is their current sale price on Herters ammo, and you could possibly discount that another 20 percent with a code. I order online for in-store pickup so that I get the quantity I want. I've been getting all my revolver plinking ammo this way for a couple of years now. They seem to run these sales every couple of months.

I remember a time not so long ago where there was no savings when reloading for the .38 Special. Now days $18 a box is celebrated, things have changed in a short time span.

Now days my cost for a box of .38 Special ammo is $5.71 and .357 Magnum ammo runs me $7.68/box.
 
If your going to buy a case or pallet you might as well buy online for 30% less than that sale price. The shipping kills the deal on 2 or 3 boxes but anything over that and it's not so bad.
 
You can purchase 38 all day for $11-12 a box shipped. How do you consider $18 a deal?

Last 38 I bought was Winchester white box for $9 per 50 shipped after rebate

I remember $.90 gas, too. It was at about the same time I got a raise to $3.00 an hour.

A thousand apologies ! In my sheltered world out here in the sticks, I actually thought that was a good deal. How incrediably stupid of me.
 
I started this Reloading / Bullet casting foolishness in 1975 with .30-06 and .38 Spl / .357 Mag calibers. More equipment, moulds, dies, presses, stuff followed. I'm retired, unemployed (either shooting or fishing for hobbies) so my time is valued at $0.00 .

I just checked my inventory costs of powder, primers, and gas checks to calculate my current costs for reloaded ammunition with cast lead bullets. I have ignored acquisition costs for scrap bullets mined from outdoor berms -- I was there shooting anyway, propane, gasoline, and electricity costs. My wife never turns a light off, so why worry about the lead melting pot?

For me 9 MM, 38 Spl, 40 S&W, and 45 ACP is ~$2.00 per 50 rounds. For the really expensive 357 Mag is $4.00 and 44 Mag is $5.50 for 50 rounds.

WalMart, Dick's, Academy, Cabela's can't beat my prices and the targets don't know the difference.

When I left for Thailand in October 1973 regular gas was $.45 / gallon for regular and I was getting $385 per month as an E-5. When I returned in August 1974 gas was up to $.75 per gallon and I was happily unemployed. I had about $1,200 separation pay in my pocket and ready to return to engineering school.
 
I used to buy gas for 17.9 cents per gallon. It was approx 1969 and I lived in east Texas with a lot of small independent oil companies. They called it gas wars. Rose Oil, EZ-Mart etc

$5.00 would get you a tank of gas, a six pack of Bud, a pack of smokes, and dinner at McDonald's for you and your date. However, I was making $0.75/hr. stocking shelves at a Kroger.

Here ya Go, This is a good resource for finding the cheapest ammunition. Outdoor Limited is my go-to site for ammo purchases. They ship pretty fast and have sales all the time.

Yep - $12 a box but the $42 shipping fee on 1000 kind of changes the total per box - more like $14 Thanks I'm familiar with ammo seek et al
 
Gotcha. Must be different for everyone- I'm getting $25.00 in shipping costs here to NY. I don't mind the shipping- Don't have the room to reload and I work 2nd, so my only option for ammo is Wally World, or my LGS early in the morning.
