Had to get some AA batteries today and I always cruise the ammo dept just to check. For the first time in over 5 years, there was .22 ammo in the case. I have been told, the same people were coming in early in the morning and taking all they had. They finally must have got all they wanted.

Wow, there was a long term shortage of 22 going back a few years ago but that is long done. It's been available just about everywhere (and in every brand) around here for well over a year.
While it's plentiful, I've laid in a 3 year supply and will not get caught short again.

There was a crowd of "cantankerous old curmudgeons" who were retired so could come in early every morning to my local Wal-Mart and buy every single box they could get their hands on. This went on for YEARS and kept most people in town from from getting access to .22 ammo.

Totally their right to do that, though. God forbid I dare say a word against "cantankerous old curmudgeons" on this forum, lest I draw their wrath! :D

Like the guys in our area that wait for the hatchery trout truck to come to a local intersection where some wait and drink coffee. Then follow it to the stream being stocked after calling their buddies. I am retired but don't pull those stunts. Shameful. Saw that Dicks had 9mm on sale a couple of weeks ago for $9. Stopped by the next day and the kid at the counter said one guy came in when they opened and bought all they had.

I'm surprised Wall-mart ,Dicks or any of the chains would allow any one person to buy them out. Back when ammo was tight, they ( along with Bass Pro and many local shops) had limits of 100 or so rounds /per person/per day. I was always supportive of that. (For the record, I never "stocked up" till it was good and plentiful).

My local WM has maintained a stock of .22 for over a year, there's always some there. At one time back in the great shortage, they did have a purchase limit, but not now. Pretty much the same story at Academy.

Still no .22 in my Walmart.

Everybody else has it.

Walmart employee told me it is Walmart store managers who are buying up all their .22s . . . as soon as the truck pulls in.

Not here

The local WalMart near me has never gotten any 22LR back in stock for several years now, I ask every time I'm in.
Last I bought from them was CCI Stinger which shoots good in all my 22 rifles but that was several years ago.
I do check often and the guy that runs that sections recognizes me and says no 22LR when he see's me.
Fortunately 22LR can be ordered now days online at several places. Just pay an extra $15 for shipping.

Academy has been a pretty good .22 source recently. They usually have at least one brand on sale, at least my closest one does. Sometimes they have fairly good sales on other calibers too, not necessarily advertised in their newspaper flyers.

Of all the things in life to cause even the slightest amount of concern, running out of .22 ammo doesn't even make the top 100 list. I never understood the urge to panic-buy .22 ammo. Oh, well...

Yeah it's been almost 2 yrs since 22 returned. I'm happy that the 500 and 525 round boxes are back. I was getting tired of buying them little 50 rounder's.

There is plenty of .22lr available now, at relatively cheap prices. I predict, though, that if the shortage hits again in a few years, the same people who were crying and moaning when it was short will be crying and moaning again.

I find that in recent years I am shooting more .22s than I used to. Probably because I find myself not enjoying reloading very much as I get older. Also because I have over ten .22 rifles and handguns that need more attention. I very nearly attempted to buy a fairly good Remington 550-1 semiauto last week, which is my favorite .22 rifle of all time. But I just couldn't force myself to spend $350 on it. $200 surely. $250 possibly. $350, no way.
