The .357 magnum 158 JSP: Remington or American Eagle

I like the .357 magnum.

I like the 158 gr. JSP as an option for woods carry for four and two legged predators.

Can anyone discern a difference between these two factory .357 magnum loads, the American eagle JSP and the Remington HTP JSP, both in 158 grain? Accuracy or velocity differences?

Anybody have any chronograph data from a 4 inch revolver?

Suggestion only...depending on your level of seriousness, get a box of each and shoot groups from a solid benchrest using good technique at 25 yards. What these loads will do in another gun with another shooter may be very different than the results you obtain under controlled conditions. Velocity is very secondary, but in a magnum loading will likely be ample. Good luck in your endeavor.
 
I agree, get a box of each and see if your revolver prefers one over the other.
 
I also test loads with the use of water jugs, plus I also see how far the bullet penetrates twelve 2x6 x8" in a bundle, as an added test.
 
I've settled on the AE 158gr JSP as my standard .357 magnum serious utility round because it feeds very smoothly in my lever rifle.
The revolvers aren't picky about ammo, and shoot it well.

One of the best places I have found for ammo reviews is midwayusa.com. You don't have to buy from them to read the reviews. If it is a popular round there are usually reviews mentioning how accurate it was from various firearms, what the actual velocity was and in the case of ammo that has hunting applications how well it performs on game. I would start there and then decide if the extra cost of the Remington HTP is worth the cost.

Most of what you are paying extra for with the Remington ammo is the bullet. The premium bullets carefully balance expansion vs penetration which really matters in rounds like the 9mm where too much of one results in not enough of the other. With a 158 gr JSP out of a 357 the extra power makes it easier to have enough of both. I would be comfortable carrying the less expensive ammo in this case.

I would probably buy some of each to try just because I like shooting and enjoy trying different loads. But as a practical matter when I am shooting fast and double action like I would if I had to defend myself it would be hard for me to blame the ammo for any missed shots. Don't get too hung up on how accurate the ammo is when shot off a solid rest at 25 yards.

I find Federal’s quality, even with its American Eagle brand, better than Remington’s nowadays and at 2/3 the price. RDub’s posts on this are truly excellent and informative.
