Question for the experts. After selling off my larger caliber’s, 44 mag & 45lc, has anyone shipped ammo via ups lately? I know it’s all dependent on box size, weight and destination, but was it expensive? A very kind member from here, cmansguns, sent me a few of the required ups stickers for the box. Thanks Charlie!!!

Have a decent supply that’s no longer needed and looking for opinions on options to sell and where.
Thanks, Ron.

There is a legal problem with you selling ammo you have loaded yourself unless you have the appropriate FFL to manufacture ammo. Also there are some packing requirements beyond just sticking a sticker on the box. Just FYI, there may be problems. If it is commercial ammo you can resell it with no legal problem (except in CA where you need a special license from the state. Also you can not ship to CA and some other states I THINK.) Good luck.

First off, I'm no expert buy any stretch. But from what I've gathered in last couple years the shipping of loaded ammo gets pretty tricky.

I'd be highly inclined to try and sell it local first.

Good luck

Rumors, rumors. Small arms ammo is shipped UPS same rate as bowling balls! Just requires the ordinance sticker. Packing just same common sense as anything else. I ship ammo all the time, mostly obsolete or hard to get like most of the classic deer rifle cartridges now.
Most UPS don’t even ask what’s in box. It’s same sticker required to ship batteries and other such flammable items. They go ground route.

Drm50, please refrain from confusing readers with the facts... ;-)

I've shipped a LOT of ammo thru my local UPS hub[ suburban [Detroit] but others in different areas aren't as lucky. If the locals have a burr in their backside it might not go well! You can't do it at a UPS store either - must be a hub.
It's legal with the appropriate label and, as noted earlier, it MUST go ground which eliminate the other two states.

Good point on the reloads aspect. Mine are all factory loads, Remington, Fiocchi, Freedom Munitions, LAX Ammo, etc (44spl, 44mag, 45lc).I’m going to make a trip to the somewhat nearby UPS hub tomorrow and ask a few questions.
Thanks on the replies

There's no special requirement needing an FFL (Class 06-Mfg'r of Small Arms Ammunition) if the ammo you ship is your reloads ,,or not.
Shipping is just that.

The Manufacturers License FFL-06 gets you in line to pay Federal Excise Tax on Ammunition. It's not needed to remanufacture (reload) ammunition if it is NOT done as a for-profit business.

Small Arms ammo is rifle/handgun cartridge 50cal and under (Bore diameter)
Shotshell 8ga and smaller.

There are packaging requirements, simply that the stuff is securely packaged in a new cardboard box and marked with the (new) symbol.

Here's the UPS website info.
I've shipped it for yrs being and 01FFL,,an 03FFL and a Nothing..

Just follow the simple rules.
Once in a while you get a Counter Manager or Clerk that freaks out and denys your package.
Show them their own regs and it gets done.
They got Ground Service from a Hub.

I did have a Clerk try and send a shipment of Handgun AMMO NextDay Air because Handguns must go NextDay Air.
It was surprising how long it took them to understand the difference in the two commoditys even with their own rules printed out in front of them.
But don't back down.

It's a simple process.

Wouldn't it be easier to ship the ammo via USPS? I thought it was no problem but I've been wrong before lol.

excess ammo shipping

I've posted before about this and agree that UPS Central Hubs seem to be hit or miss, especially around here. I just went ahead and opened an account on line and then request a residential pickup at my home.

My last excess ammo sale on this Forum was March 2022 and I had 4 lots of ammo. The most expensive shipping cost was 800 rounds of 22 WMR going to a Forum Member in Wisconsin and package weight was 11.2 lbs, box size 12"x12"x6" with appropriate stickers. Cost was $31.83 Ground.

The beauty of a account is that you know the costs up front as long as your customer has sent you their mailing address and you know this before you actually make the sale..so for me at least..I can list on the Forum, my price for the ammo AND that actual shipping costs will be given to buyer when address is known, and 1 payment for all.

The UPS requirements are ammo in partitioned, sturdy containers, corrugated outer container, no bulk or loose rounds.

Again...the above works for me in my area...I do not know anything about any other area, so read it for what it is...I'm not offering any type of firm advice so do your own local research.

PS: My son bought some 9 mm ammo from a big on-line ammo store and I guess it was shipped properly from the store, but somewhere along the way the box was left out in the rain, or the truck leaked, or ??? but the pic you see is what was delivered with a "overwrapper" of security tape attempting to hold it all together. I suppose he didn't HAVE TO accept it, but he did, and round count was correct. Ammo has all shot fine but I think this is a pretty good example of what NOT to expect from a shipper.

The Ammo Wholesale outfits ship tons of ammo everyday that is delivered by UPS to private individuals. I’m not up on state law that might not allow this.
Also if you live in the real world you know it don’t have to be ammo that arrives damaged or wet. I live in boonies with same UPS guy, he doesn’t pull that stuff. Couple years ago was doing a restaurant and pizza shop at same time. Caught a deal on Grease Traps. They went just over 125lbs each. They came FedEx, who kicked them out on the road, in the rain. I didn’t find them till I came home that night.

Did go to my local UPS hub. No problem on shipping, but it was more than I thought. Then again what isn’t nowadays??? Gave them an example size box and weight to Tx. Will probably put an ad up, but hope for someone within a reasonable distance from me to be interested. Thanks for all the advice/ replies.

In terms of 'price' at UPS - a private individual doesn't get the same pricing as their business customers! That's why the 'big' sellers can advertise flat rate pricing for example.

Well, I just got a Lot of primed brass. I was going to sell part of it. Does it need to go UPS? Never shipped primed brass or ammo. I thought the only primed brass I got was 30-30 but I was wrong...I'ts all primed...1000 new 30-30 1000 new 357 250 new 32 H&R mag and I got a box of Winchester Silvertips in 32 Remington and another box of 356 Winchester. Do I have to ship primed brass as ammo??

I just bought two boxes of SIG-SAUER 9mm "blemished" ammunition. The blemish is that the brass cases are not uniformly shiny. Like anyone cares?

As far as I can tell they were delivered by UPS to my shipping address and the box was not marked ORM-D which surprised me.
