OK, I'm done for this year. 9mm case was $170 back before the last election, $217 yesterday. The .22's are a shade under $.06/rd, about as good as it's been. I paid $.59/box 50 in the mid 1960's, inflation calculator says $.59 in 1966 would be $5.59 today. Such a deal. I have been buying small quantities for the last few months. I gotta stop because all my ammo cans are full. Joe

Don't blame you guys! Have found the price of ammo ridiculous especially at shops like Bass Pro Shop. Wanted $18 for 22 mag per 50. Hard to believe $.59 back in 66 is now $5.59!! Won't get into the centerfire prices as am sure you already know.

Prices are pretty good with many vendors offering free shipping . If needed now is likely the time to buy.

At a Farm Supply Store I visited today three display cases were packed full of handguns (alas only four revolvers) and the racks were full of long guns. They have a lot of ammunition in stock. Supply has clearly caught up with demand.

I see no reason for ammunition prices not to continue to drop for the rest of the year

I was omitting the “Target Sports + membership” which is $95/12 mos. Yesterday was “National Ammo Day” (Sept 19, for at least 20 yrs) so they doubled the usual 8% discount. The discount covers the “extras” routinely. Nice thing with “+” is I can order 1 box and get free shipping. Joe

I have been buying various calibers of ammo each month as I find deals. I also will replace ammo that I use the most as I can find deals. I started buying ammo in bulk back in the mid to late 80's and stacking it away. My hoarded supplies have allowed me to avoid buying ammo during the various frenzies that we have endured and still shoot as much as I want. As soon as the prices started to come back down I started to replace that ammo shot up. I try to buy 500 or 1000 rounds or more per month.

I haven't bought any ammunition other than subsonic .22lr in a long time, but I haven't been shooting as much as I used to either. I've got more ammo than one could shoot in several lifetimes now. My rule of thumb has always been to have 1,000+/- rounds for each firearm I own and that has worked out well.

Without ammunition a weapon is pretty much useless, a rifle or shotgun becomes a club, and a pistol or revolver becomes a very expensive rock to be thrown...

Edit: but I do need to get me another case of .40...

Unless supply eventually exceeds demand.

That is what I am holding out for. Shutting down the production and supply lines when supply=demand doesn't happen instantaneously. There is a bit of a lag between sales and production.

So I'm still waiting for that "sweet spot" when the production and stock-on-hand exceeds the immediate sales demand. That's the point when the production and sales channels start trying to move the product sitting on the shelves through discounts and rebates, etc.

I believe that convergence of market forces is just around the corner. But I could be wrong - it certainly wouldn't be the first time.

However, even if that opportune moment never materializes, I probably have enough reloading supplies to last me the rest of my life, so as I see it, I have nothing to lose by hedging my bets.

Did that quite a while before the last big shortage & had no shortage Myself,Folks should have learned to be prepared but some won't & will be crying the blues during the next shortage and by the way prices ain't likely to go down Example:the Hornady #2267 .223 55grain bullets were less than $10 a hundred most places the new price is in the $15 neighborhood

I did that a few years ago and still sitting ok, I am kinda glad I did after seeing the price of ammo go completely insane in fact 2 years ago a friend of a friend got in touch with me because he had purchased a new .45 app pistol but couldn't find ammo anywhere so I traded him 200 rounds of Winchester 230gr fmj and 50 rounds of mixed 230gr jhp for him to test in his pistol for reliability for a 19hp bronco riding lawnmower in excellent running condition.

Now? No.

But back around 2008, when we had a shortage, I mentioned it to my wife. She asked me, "Are you stocking up?"

I received that not only as permission, but as an instruction. For about twelve years I went to town with it.

So these days if I see ammo or components that are somewhat reasonable, I still buy them. But I don't really need to.

I bought cheap and stacked deep right before the pandemic. I need to sell ammo because I have way more than I will ever shoot in my lifetime but it's hard to let go of it. As the saying goes, it ain't eating anything.

Another thing to keep in mind, we are entering the presidential election season and I anticipate there being another run on ammo/guns as the election nears, if people have enough income to spare. I suspect there is going to be real fear of the election results (the fix will be in) and any new "rules" that will be coming.

Yes and No! For the guys that stocked up when the market was low - kuddos to them. That said, many did not as they believed the marked would soon crash again. Apparently that isn't happening,

I am in the camp that believes the prices are pretty much as low as they are gonna go (within a buck or two) and in the long run will drastically increase. Even if the ammo itself does not skyrocket, there will be ammo taxes, NICS checks in certain liberal States, and record keeping. Limits as to how many boxes you can buy and shortages because of all of this. All of which just lends a hand to jack up the price.

I see ammo as sort of a commodity now - I doubt anyone would loose money on it. I sincerely hope I am wrong here, but from where I stand I don't think so - at least until the next Presidential election.

Hey - I recently decided to stock up on certain commodities like coffee. We are big lovers of 8 o'clock Columbian Dark Roast and it keeps going up every time we buy it. When I see it on sale I buy 6-10 30 ounce bags. This way when it's not on sale we don't have to get screwed on buying it at high prices. Again, I doubt it will ever substantially or permanently come down. I could of course be wrong, my crystal ball hasn't been working in 3 years.

Right now, good buys are not common on either guns or ammo. 2024 is coming. May have to start buying ammo at today's prices as after the next election cycle ... odds are not good that things will improve. Sincerely. bruce.

I’ve always bought ammo when I see it at a good price relative to the moment.

Because I’ve been doing this for years, there is no particular moment when I’m in a hurry to buy: I’ve got enough on hand not to have an immediate need to buy ammo at any given moment.

That and a lot of older pistols and revolvers are being traded in or sold to the shop I work at. Picked up a Model 39-2 and a Pre Model 10 within the last month at prices that I could not say no to.

A great reminder that I need some more ammo. Ha.

You can never have too much... be it plinking or for the potential zombie apocalypse. Ammo is good to have.

I too wish it was cheaper though! I'll reload eventually when money permits.

I bought a ton of 357 magnum defensive ammo recently because the price on my favorite ammo was below a buck a round, which in 357 land is a steal these days. Free shipping for orders over 200$ and ended up spending like 600 and being good for a year for defensive ammo. Now I can just replenish with a brick of 200 every time I get down to 400 rounds.

I need to replenish my .22 supply. I was stocked up back in 2018 but shooting an average of 50 to 100 rounds per week for the last couple years has started to make a noticeable dent in my stash. I'm kind of hoping black Friday has some decent deals but if that doesn't happen I plan to at least buy one 5,000 round case before year end.

Building a stash is like contributing to your 401K ...... start young and put some aside every paycheck. Don't wait till you're in your 50s to get started!

Every year after deer season .... "deer Calibers" would go on "sale". I'd buy a couple of 20rd boxes every year..... today I've got a nice stash of .243.

Same with .22 and other ammo ........ add a little bit every time you see a sale or bargain...............

It's almost painless

Nonsense.

I had very little .22 L.R. on hand when the .22 Ammo Panic occurred. It wasn’t a concern for me as I only had a couple of rifles and pistols and rarely shot them. Well I avoided getting caught up in the panic and just rode it out. Since the panic has ended I have made it a habit to buy a brick or two regularly especially when it was on sale. My local farm supply store ran ammunition on sale regularly so I still check every time I would buy feed. Well I have managed to accrue 10k +/- of various brands. I have various brands as .22 firearms are known to ammo picky.

During the COVID pandemic I started shooting my .22’s. I even brought several .22 handguns. So my large supply of ammo will keep me shooting until market stability returns. I hope it is sooner than later. As commented the elections next year will have consequences.

Exactly. I piled on in 2004 when 9mm was $3.88/b0x 50. Piled more in 2008 before that "panic." Bought in 2012 before that panic. Skipped 2016 but did pile in 2018-19. Piling now, I got more than I can shoot in this lifetime. Currently, as a "budget item" $25/week don't hurt a bit. Joe

Ammo and components is a commodities market. It goes up and down. Some day in the not too distant future supply will overwhelm demand. It always happens. There is no good way to know what the demand will be in 3-6 months but that isn't going to stop manufacturers from making more then retailers can sell in a 30 day cycle.

As one dealer once told me, we aren't in the ammo storage business.

I’ve got plenty but just took advantage of the Target Sports one day deal. Picked up 500 .45 acp and 1000 10mm.

As I mentioned on another forum, I don't smoke, I don't drink coffee or soda, and I cut my own hair. I have plenty of extra cash to spend on guns and ammo...

I've been using SGAmmo when he has deals. Always free shipping with a $200 purchase. Good sale prices on 22LR, 38spl, 9mm, and 45ACP over the past few years. Always wish I could use my LG stores, but for a very long time, when the shortage started, first they had nothing, then it cost too much. Several years ago I always exited my favorite LG, Bridgeport Equipment, with two or three boxes of Federal .223 at $5 and change each for 20 rounds. Sigh. The good old days.

We will soon be heading into a long period of political, social, and military turmoil, and ammo will get short again, I am afraid.

I don’t see the upcoming Presidential election going well for “ us “.
Anyone who has not stocked up already had better do it now.

You don’t list your location but I think you are describing regional differences in gun and ammunition control. I think we all recognize that the restrictions on selling and buying ammo and extra taxes per round / box are all backdoor attempts at gun control. But this is only being done in the States that have a long history of strict gun control such as New York.

Looking at the current direction of the Federal Courts (not just The Supreme Court) and we are getting mostly Pro-2A rulings. Sure some Liberal Judges and States are kicking, dragging and rewriting laws to avoid Bruen but the direction of the Courts is clear.

Here in the Merry Old Land of OZ there is not any serious attempts at Gun and Ammunition restrictions so any change will have to be on the National Level which is not going to happen with the divided Congress.

Not seeing anything Cheap to stack deep or otherwise. Cheaper ? Yup but not cheap. Hoping components get back in good supply at a reasonable price is the best I can do right now. Not fueling the inflation.

I am not at this time as I already did so a year or more ago. I am in my mid 70's and believe I have enough 9mm to last me as long as I will be needing it.

That being said my friend who owns the LGS is planning to close for good at the end of the year. Two years ago, he went to PT 3 days a week. He has several 500 rd cases of WW 9mm left and has promised me a "good deal" if I should need more. If there is any left at the end of the year, I will buy some for old times sake and a few friends of mine will be gifted ammo in the future.

I recently took advantage of the Winchester rebate for 5.56 and I just bought a nice quantity of 124gr 9mm from a private party for $10 per box. Who know if prices will come down but I don’t really need more for now.

As one dealer once told me, we aren't in the ammo storage business.

The right time to stock up on ammunition is when it's available and you've got the funds to buy.

I certainly wouldn't be buying that Federal Champion mentioned in the OP. 115gr @ 1125 fps? That might be a problem in my pistols sprung for proper 9mm ammo.

"Federal Champion ammunition is designed specifically for target shooting, training and practice."

MPN WM51991

Manufacturer Federal Ammo
Caliber 9mm Luger Ammo
Bullet Type Full Metal Jacket
Muzzle Velocity 1180 fps
Muzzle Energy 356 ft. lbs

Casing Brass Casing
Ammo Rating Target & Practice 9mm Luger Ammo

I've shot half a dozen cases of this ammo in many different 9mm's. Exactly 1 malfunction, a primer crushed in sideways failed to ignite. Joe

“Reasonable” will end up being about 40% to 80% higher than pre-China Virus prices, if we are lucky. Expect major fluctuations in price and availability.

Same with me. Well stocked, but always looking for deals on loaded ammo and components. Some call it hoarding. I call it being prepared. Guns are useless without bullets.
