Which do you prefer for hiking that may include some scrambling, a button (snap) strap or a hammer thong? Is there an advantage of one over the other? I've had straps but never a hammer thong so just looking for opinions.
Thanks.

Hammer thongs are something of an anachronism these days, primarily good for historical reproduction pieces (I offer thongs on my Threepersons-style holsters, a 90-year old design).

A strap and snap generally offers better security. But the strap can get caught on things and inadvertently pop the snap open.

A better option might be the thumb-break style retention. This places the snap where it is less likely to be inadvertently released, and also allows for an easier draw with a single hand motion.

Best regards.

It seems to me that Lobo sums it up pretty well. I had a thong once on a good holster for my 7.5" Super Blackhawk. Of course, it was secure, but slow? You could almost get a MA carry permit faster than drawing that gun.

If you really want to be safe (and still be fast), get or make a lanyard. There are some modern designs that are convenient, but even "parachute cord" (550# test line?) can be used very well, and the excess (while carrying) simply tucked into the pants.

Actually I think Ray (lobogunleather) will make you a holster with both, you can experiment. I think that a full flap holster with a lanyard if you like is the way to go scrambling around in the briars and vines.

In my experience, I like a high ride holster. I have several Bianchi 5BHL holsters & have never regretted them. Why? They carry a revolver high & snug on a good belt. Thumb break is reasonably secure. Carry is concealable under a light jacket.
Other holsters may meet these requirements but this is my yardstick.
