I have a 6" 629-3 that I plan on carrying when I am out in Montana. What kind of holster do you guys recommend?

He (Erik) has made a 629 44 Mag 4" barrel for me so I know he makes that model.

Thanks, but I probably should have clarified I was looking for advice on IWB, OWB and shoulder holsters. Which is better for my application, IWB, OWB, or a different type? However, now that you recommended then, I will look into them.

Since this is the Concealed Carry Area, I am guessing you are carrying the 6" N Frame out of sight?

Inside the waist band. This might work. I have never tryed to carry a 6" N Frame this way, but I am sure it is doable. I believe Lobo will make a 6" holster. It is probably worth $60 to order one and give it a try. You will probably need to check out a looser pair of jeans.

Next would probably be a shoulder holster such as an X15 Bianchi. I am barrel chested and have short arms. Not the best choice for me. If you can reach the gun with no problem, this should work.

OWB I would check out a cross draw. Lobo makes one that will work that way. You may need a little longer cover garments for this style with a 6".

After that I would look into swapping it for a 4" that is much easier to conceal. I have a Lobo Enhanced Pancake on order for my 4" 610 at the moment. I am sure it will carry concealed just fine. A 6" is harder to work with.

When I am in the field and can carry by 44 mag exposed I carry it in a cross draw holster. I like the DeSantis the best, but the Bianchi and the Galco are good too.

If you are carrying IWB with a 6" the best holster I have used is the De Santis I think the model No is 46. In fact for the last few weeks I have been carrying my 6 1/2" Mod 29 in one every day. It places the cylinder of the revolver above the belt. It is very comfortable to wear, even when seated.

I like shoulder holsters. Easy to cover up and protect gun and it is not pulling my pants down. I have used them for close to 50 yrs. and the only problem is now I am so old and stiff it is hard to get my arms in one. Larry

It doesn't have to be concealed since I will likely be hiking out in the woods. It is definitely self defense though. I would think a 6" IWB would be a little uncomfortable. But then again, I use an IWB for my Five Seven which is a big gun, and I have no problems with it. The N frame would be a little bigger though.

I am looking into getting a Mountain Gun at some point, but all the prices have been crazy so I have been putting that off. If anyone knows of a relatively cheap 629-3 or 629-4 mountain gun, let me know. I don't know if the -5s have a lock, but if not, then I would consider that as well.

Since I would be out hiking, I don't think concealment is going to be a big issue. I don't think too many people people in Montana would freak out if they saw someone carrying a gun in bear country. I will look into a cross draw holster. Thanks.

I'd get an old half flap police swivel holster....and wear in on a Sam Browne belt with a knife and a canteen and a dozen extra rounds in loops. That would be cool.....

I use an Uncle Mike's shoulder holster for my 629, 6". I use in in the outback when hiking, fishing, photo shoots. I wear a light jacket (nylon wind breaker type) over it, if I want to conceal it. I find it works just fine for me and it was not expensive.

I like crossdraw, especially for longer barrel lengths. I use a Galco Outdoorsman for my Ruger SBH and they have one for DA revolvers, too.

If you are not going to carry a backpack then I would suggest a shoulder rig. With a back pack then look at a cross draw. My preference is Back Country holsters. Google it, the guy is in Virginia but will ship anywhere. He has a nice OWB/Crossdraw combo that works really well with the Nframe. I have one for my 629 Mountain gun. If you need a back pack look at the Badlands Superday. It has a nice holster made in the waist band that works well. I have to say...you gotta get your mind right. You keep saying "concealment is not necessary." Even in bear country or so called wilderness there is a better chance you will cross paths with an ill minded person than an ill minded bear and there is no better advantage than being able to totally surprise the bad guy with an N-frame outta no where he wasn't counting on!!!!!
