I like the look and the way they seem to fit a firearm. My question is will kydex wear the finish off a blue steel revolver faster than leather? It just seems that a kydex holster would be really abrasive on a guns finish.

Most likely yes but i dont think you'll be able to measure it in years. I have blued Police guns that rode in leather and the bluing on them is just as worn

which holster is more secure? which you like better? they will both Wear the weapon. the thick krydex seems/is wider off the hip. my 2 cts., i like the Serpa holster by Backhawk. only happened to me once, but in a crowd, a stout women pushed past me, her wrist got stuck between the pistol grip and my waist, i locked down on the grip, she almost went to the ground. i took her arm from behind the grip. she looked at me, at my hip, and she still didn't know what happened. she said she was sorry she bumped into me and asked if she could leave. i just smiled at her. have a Hunter leather holster 40+ years, have sewed it by hand a few times. i guess what you are using the weapon for might be the thought on which holster at the time. Bianchi Accu-Mold holds up well.

Kydex and leather

Have carried hgns for 40 yrs...IWB and OWB....in leather and kydex when it became available.....if I am carrying IWb I tend to go with Kydex.....years ago I had a blued revolver in a leather IWB rig and I lived in a really hot and humid area.....had issues with the holster soaking up perspiration and transferring it to the gun, got caught in a downpour one afternoon, hot and humid.....when I took the gun out of the holster at the end of the shift, the bluing was completely gone from two sides of the cylinder.
I tend to go with stainless guns and kydex now for IWB and use the blued guns and leather for OWB.
As far as wear goes, it depends of how much you pull the gun in and out of the holster, I've got blued guns that have been carried daily for deacdes in good leather, and yes they show "honest wear", but all carry guns are going to over a period of time. Same with the kydex, I have a first gen G-17 that has been "presented" out of a kydex rig probably a million times, it has virtually no finish on any contact surfaces of the slide.

I've had My Shield riding around in a Kydex IWB from Foxx for a few weeks now and it is starting to show a minuscule amount of wear at the contact points at the front of the slide. Right now it's only on the corners, but I also haven't been taking it out that much. I have been practicing my presentation so it's coming out more than some, but I'm also not running drills nonstop everyday either. Maybe 10-15 times a week and that includes taking it out and putting it away each night. Overall I plan to polish the slide so it won't be an issue in the long run for me anyway, but just adding my experience.

Rahjers,

Going back to the days when cops wore blued steel revolvers, I have tried cowhide, horsehide, lined and unlined as well as synthetic holsters and the common finding was normal wear on the edges wear from inserting and removing on the usual spots- muzzle, cylinder edge, trigger guard. On autos, slide & trigger guard.

Most wear was caused by holsters that were stretched out and loose, allowing the gun to slip and rub, this won't be an issue on the types of holsters that most CCW people will use, because they are belt worn, not lower on a swivel, where the excessive movement will be found.

ANY GUN - even Stainless Steel wil "wear" when carried for a while. While my M60 obviously has no "finish" to wear off, it has worn on the end of the barrel and on the cylinder. Since it is a "business - gun" it does not bother me in the least.

I have carried it for at least 20+ years and if & when it ever bothers me I'll either polish it up so the entire gun looks the same or I will have it bead blasted.

I am aware many like Kydex and while I will admit to having never tried one, I can also say I have never had the desire to either. My holy grail holster for the last 10 years has been a Kramer Horsehide Belt Scabbard and IMHO it is simply the best for me. Not saying anything negative about Kydex, just never enticed me. YMMV.

Carried a lot for many years,

constantly for last 30+ and I like leather best. Quiet, not stiff enough to bother me, to me easier on the gun, but that is just the opinion of one old fart.:D

I don't know, putting a blued steel revolver in a plastic holster just doesn't seem right.
A quality blued steel gun deserves some quality leather. If you're worried about wear get a quality pigskin lined leather holster and leave the plastic holsters for the plastic guns.

My plastic gun has a blued stainless slide. So what material would you suggest? Haven't found one that holds it like my Kydex
