I was just at a local grocery store that I buy lots of groceries at, and noticed a new sign on their door, that mentioned the Texas Department of Alcohol .... and said 'the unlicensed possession of a weapon on these premises ...". Anyways I
had to stop and think since I was carrying concealed, and have
not seen this sign before. Not long ago the store started stocking beer, but it does a huge volume of business and there
is no chance that 51 percent of their sales could be from alcohol

Since the sign did not have a 51 percent on it, and was not a
30.06 sign, and did say unlicensed possession, it does not apply
to CHL holders. Then it occurred to me, if Texas ever does pass
Open Carry, I am concerned that they might then put up the
legal sign that applies to CHL holders. Of course if they do,
I will then have to drive to one of two states not far away to
shop for groceries.

Has anyone ever seen a legal no weapons sign at a major grocery store?

Here's some clarification:

It's not a new sign at all. You see that sign at a lot of convenience stores, along with the one prohibiting consumption of alcohol on the premises. The point being, no drinking here (7/11, etc.) and no unlicensed guns. You're OK with a CHL.

The 51% sign, on the other hand, applies to a pure bar where consumption of alcohol IS legal, but NO guns are allowed, including with CHL. This is to keep guns out of pure BARS that get 51% or more of their income from booze.

The vast majority of places where booze is served and consumed are restaurants and CHL IS LEGAL there. Drinking while carrying with a CHL is OK, but you must not be impaired, similar to the logic on drinking and driving.

I've never seen or heard of a legal no weapons sign at a grocery store in Texas, just the "Unlicensed possession" sign.

The 30.06 sign has nothing to do with booze. It prohibits ALL guns and is usually only seen on hospitals/clinics, schools, and government buildings.

Thanks for the info. I been living in a dry county a long time
till recently.

Just about all of the WalMarts I've been in, along with Bass Pro, some actual Liquor stores (that just sell... no consumption) and a few other places have displayed these 'the unlicensed possession of a weapon on these premises ...' for a few Years now and should not be confused with the official TX '30-06' or '51%' signs. :)

As noted, the key words are "unlicensed possession".

Here in NH open carry is legal. No permit needed. Concealed is legal with a permit. We have to respect no gun signs. No training needed.
The gun owner has it good in NH, at least for now.

Un-liscensed

Im in Texas and ive seen those. Notice it says unliscensed. Its telling criminals not to break the law in their building.

The green sign is non valid, and serves as nothing more than information regarding 30.06. There are size, contrast and location requirements for the 30.06 signage. (Unless, of course, the letters are 1" or more in height)

Your CHL instructor should have explained this sign. This sign only applies to those who do not have a CHL.

Both Republicans running for Governor in Texas have vowed to make our gun laws here in Texas more clear and remove many restriction presently in place. All in the know feel Texas will move inline with Georgia. With virtually Constitutional Carry! I personally will carry concealed. I prefer having element of surprise instead of being first target!

This stirs my curiosity....
Regarding that " first target" cliché...I'd like to see documentation of how many open carriers have been "shot first".
(Kentucky, Georgia, Oklahoma and many other states could produce proof of this phenomenon, if it actually happens, but I can't seem to find any proof of it.)

Casual observation shows me there is a deterrent effect when a criminal notices armed (non LEO) individuals.

This seems to fall into the fantasy that criminals are outlaw gunfighters rather than opportunistic predators.
I see "gun free zone" much the same as "open carry free zone".

Remember the anti's said there would be gunfights in the streets when concealed carry was allowed.

Yeah but in moving in line with those states by legalizing open carry I think a lot of places are going to put up those 30.06 signs. I do not mind the 51 % signs either since I do not drink,
and if I see one of those I have no need to be there. When it
comes to concealed carry, I want to keep my license so I try to
stay 100 percent legal. I know the 2nd amendment is in the
constitution and I support it. At the same time I am not young
any more, and I would rather pay that fee, and prefer carry
concealed anyway. If they legalized open carry I would not carry open
unless they made it illegal to conceal carry.

51% ban.... The state dictating a ban on guns on private property is no better than dictating that guns be allowed on private property. The state has no business dictating such things, whether it be at a bar or parking lot.

The "state" in this case was a majority of the citizens of Texas. It's a compromise most of us here feel is very reasonable. And for most of us it's moot anyway as there are very few 51%-type bars in Texas except for a few in big cities. I personally haven't even seen one in years.

Until not very long ago (last year?) didn't TN ban carry in any place that served any amount of alcohol? I remember seeing bars with signs stating that. Even the small bars at the Ryman were posted as well as just about every place on Music Row.

The laws in TN and TX seem to have a lot of similarities except that TN has open carry.

The Notice sigh is in most every store, restaurant I know of. Has been there for a long time.

Yessir, TABC requires it in a place that sells alcoholic beverages, if that is less than 51% of GROSS sales. They make all license holder display one or the other, so the "weapons warning" should be on every supermkt and ice house. Here's the red tape:
TABC Sign Requirements

Lot of the 51% signs down on the coast....
Bar licensees have been legal to carry concealed for many years (and designated mgr. of same). I was always on my way to or coming from work in the family bars.

Yes. Used to be a ban at any place that served.

There were two guns in bars bills, 2009 and 2010. First bill tried to qualify alcohol/food/revenue kinda like Texas. Then the courts got involved and ruled that unconstitutionally vague. Next bill cleared things up by making gun carry legal in any place that served, period :D. Can't consume if carrying. Bars and restaurants can set their own policy whether they allow guns or not. And IIRC it is unlike guns in parking lots in that it is enforceable. My bar hopping days (other than the local watering hole) are long past me so I don't pay much attention to it.

My guess is that OC laws will be similar before long. OC is such a non-issue here. Few open carry and no one notices or fusses about those who do.

Guns and alcohol. Personally, I avoid going into establishments that sell alcohol, and when I do go inside, I sit at tables not at the bar. I don t need to explain to the grand jury why I just had to shoot the drunk that got pissed off because I accidentally bumped him or spilled his drink or just happened to look his direction and he thought I was annoying him. Drunks do weird things, I would rather avoid the encounter than have to shoot him because I'm out of lesser options.
