Loading and unloading your carry gun

Both

Yes, I do both. I unload my carry gun if it's one I don't routinely carry but I keep several carry guns loaded all the time because it's easier to deal with. They're not lying around loose (they're locked up) so I see no reason to unload them unless it's cleaning time (seldom!).

I keep a loaded weapon on each floor of the home. It stays loaded until I take it to the range and fire it. After cleaning it gets loaded again.

Being a new handgun owner, I'm constantly loading/unloading my one and only gun. I live alone, so I practice stance and grip all the time at home. And when I do, I clear it first. My IWB holster should be coming in the mail tomorrow. So then I'll be practicing drawing too.

If your gun is a semi-auto, and you are chambering and unchambering the same round over and over, this can lead to bullet set back and unsafe pressures.

Revolver stays loaded and goes on the nightstand , next to night stand is 12 gauge pump, it stays loaded also.
Unloaded sort of defeats the purpose of being ready.

My duty gun currently is my carry gun so its always loaded. Gets unloaded for cleaning and practice.

Speaking of my gun needs to be cleaned

Hi Smoke,

I shoot my carry guns on a decently regular basis. I keep them loaded in between these times, unless there's some reason to do otherwise. I've certainly observed shortening of rounds due to unnecessary cycling of the ammo in semiautos as Jaysq mentions.

cheers, erich

My EDC sometimes is a Model 37, and sometimes an M&P .380 depending on a variety of circumstances. The carry gun that stays in the safe remains loaded, unlike the others that are not loaded. I put a Post-It note on the holster of the M37, or .380 that says "Loaded" if one of them is in the safe.

All are loaded with one in pipe always. All wheels full.Only time unloaded is walking into range or cleaning.

For once I'm with the majority here. All three of my ready revolvers are loaded at all times, with the exception of cleaning or being transferred to a different room of the house, for dry fire practice. I will not do any unloaded practice in the same room were the gun was unloaded and the ammo is stored.

All my other revolvers are in SAFE storage. This means unloaded, in silicon treated storage bags, and in a secure storage container.

I have always been taught to minimize unnecessary administrative handling of my firearms. Because of this I make a point of never unloading my carry gun unless I am cleaning it.

When I get home from work I take my employer's gun out of my holster and put it in my gun safe as is. I don't unload it at the end of my shift and reload it before work (Setback).

Similarly my personal weapon is in the safe loaded if I'm not carrying it.

So my question is do you unload your carryguns (I'm not talking about a hunting rifle that you only shoot during deer season)when you store them or do you leave them loaded?

I unload the carry guns every so often, just so I can keep the pocket boogers out of the works . . .

all of my pistols and revolvers are loaded. some in the safe and some on my person or within arms reach. they are unloaded only when they are cleaned and then reloaded. an unloaded firearm is only good for a paper weight......

I'm going to say no I do not unload however I do in certain situations that are specific to my work. Occasionally I have to go out of state (only 5 miles away) so I would leave my gun in the office. Just to be on the safe side I unload it and take the slide off and put that in a different spot......just in case. But no, generally the only time I unload is at the range through the barrel

Always three or four carry rotation or for HD that stay loaded. May rotate depending on time of the year and whether I am carrying one as back up hunting or not and a different one for summer carry. Ones that are in the rotation but are in the safe, are in a box with a tag on the outside indicating loaded, until I take them to the range. 1 or more is shot every week or two and the the chambered round is always used up. after cleaning is when I do all the dry fire practice with that weapon before it is reloaded. Ones that are not in the rotation are in the box in the safe unloaded with no tag.
