Ccw/woods gun recommendations

Why do you feel that you need to kill a rattlesnake? They serve a valuable purpose in nature. They are not aggressive unless provoked -- but will still tend to retreat if molested. Get yourself a long walking staff.
I don't want to, actually I don't want to see one. But if it's him or me. I choose him.

If a snake wants to bite you and your with in his range your going to be bitten no matter how fast you can draw and fire. What are you doing out in snake county without some kind of boots and long pants? Just walk away. I doubt that there is a rattle snake anywhere that can make a 4' strike and that would take a big snake. The majority of snake bites occur on peoples hands, 1 because they try to handle them (duh) 2 because they stick their hands in places they should check first.

Snake guns threads rank right there with bear gun threads.

Snakes are out in the hills, woods and prairies because they belong there. As long as they stay there and I don't need any snake skin or a meal they are safe from me.

this idea that snakes never strike if unprovoked is incorrect.
last year, one did strike at me for no reason.
some are more aggressive than others.
a stick isn't enow.
on the plains they get over 5' long n as thick as your upper arm.
i don't hunt these things. i only kill those that come near the house.
you have to do that because they sometimes strike without warning.
the one that struck at me rattled AFTER he struck.

alertness n situational awarness is key, but it's hard to be alert all the time.

yeah, i hate killing things that eat mice but you can't allow them round the house.
out in the pasture, i just retreat if i can.

A human's definition of provocation is undoubtedly different from a snake's definition of it.

You say the snake struck at you "for no reason". If you're within striking distance of a snake, especially a big diamondback, the snake probably looks at that two ways...you're either provoking/attacking it, or you're a food source. That's reason enough, far as the snake's concerned.

Big diamondbacks key in on a heat source and ground/air vibrations. They don't know you're trying to step around them and they don't know you haven't seen them. And they really couldn't care less if you're a person instead of a mouse.

A Taurus Judge loaded with either #6 shot or 4 buck or both in chambers 1 and 2. Keep some triple 000 buck in one chamber and some .45 colt Hornady Critical defense in another in case of bear or two legged snakes. Watch some YouTube videos by shootingthebull410. See his video on the Lehigh Extreme Expansion! WOW!

Ever lost an animal you loved to a venomous snake bite, or paid exhorbitant vet bills to treat a critter thats been bitten by a rattler? When I'm out In the field or woods during summer, I carry either a model 60 snubby or a model 66 snubby loaded with defensive rounds, supplemented with a speed strip of snakeshot. I'd sugget the .357 magnum for bear control; otherwise, a .38 special works well for self protection.

i could care less what snakes think. im all for live and let live right up till it bothers me or mine. then it time for it to go. a 5 shot 3 inch 357 is the best cc/woods gun. small,(yet big enough to shoot well) conceals well when needed but dont look out of place in open carry with enough umph to do what needs to be done in 90%+ situations. having said that i carry a 22 in the woods and have for 4 decades and never felt under gunned.

I have two camping/hiking guns that I use.
First and most often used is a Model 60-4 Chief's Special target. Nice little J-frame with a 3" barrel and adjustable sights. I carry it in a good OWB holster and hardly even notice it. For me, its the ideal trail gun. :D

If I'm wandering in places with larger critters to consider, then I carry my 3" 696 .44 special. Great gun and not at all bad to carry in a good holster. Sorry, no pic of that one.

However, I seriously doubt that you could find either in a week. :( So i recommend that you carry whatever revolver you have handy and are comfortable with for now.

I don't use snake shot because I very rarely kill snakes. It would have to a an immediate threat with no other option for me to even consider killing one. Remember, you're a guest in his house. Don't be a bad one. ;)

When I lived in the N.E. Georgia Mountains, I would see these power company guys carry the "snake charmer," small, light, compact .410 shotguns. We had snakes! Fortunately, not like Iggy! In a group of hikers, 1 or 2 should be sufficient, oh and try not to set up for the night where the snake already lives. Suzie Q is correct.

Have you ever considered using rocks to kill those vicious snakes?
RattlesnakeDen-1.jpg

I've killed lots of them that way or with my rope or a spade, if there weren't any rocks available. Can't see wasting ammo on old Ray Rattler.

While my favorite woods/trail guns are my 625 mountain gun or ruger blackhawk both in 45 colt.If I had snakes like Iggy I would want hand gernades.

S&W 649 is my do-it-all.

- 2.125" J frame for CCW
- .357 for bears
- bit meatier than Airweights for comfort at range and taming .357s
- no snag shrouded hammer
- single action option for more deliberate/surgical shots on 4-legged threats at distance.

Carried 642 in a fanny pack. No issues. Very comfortable. New firearm purchase got out on hold due to a job change in coming weeks. 1 baby snake seen (non venomous). Hike was amazing. Thank you for recommendations, planning to purchase before next trip.
