Opinions on this cartridge for a self defense round? Older article stated it was intended to have same muzzle energy as 357 magnum but with less felt recoil.

It's quite controllable and hits hard. I wouldn't hesitate to use it.

I had a charter patriot in .327 mag. Bitchin round. Can shoot from .32 S&W to .32 long and .32 H&R mag. Very versatile.

I love this round. A revolver chambered in this caliber will actually fire 5 different cartridges. As far as the .327 Federal Magnum, the performance exceeds the .38 Special and it almost equals the .357. The advantage is most of the .327 revolvers chamber 6 rounds versus 5 for the .357. Ballistic data here:

I have two revolvers in this caliber , both Rugers, and I am very happy with them.

There are those here who will say "yeah, but you can't find the .327 ammo." True, you can't find it at Wally World, but my LGS carries it. It can also be found readily online. But the fact is, for me, I would not shoot the .327 Mag round all day at the range anyway. I practice with one of the lower powered rounds. I save the .327 Mag for carry. JMO

Modern .32 inside the 8-ring will shift the initiative every time.

.357 outside the 8-ring, not as much.

Modern .32 generates noise levels comparable to .357, and in revolver, offers no size advantage for carry. So, there's that.

Get shot in the liver or heart with modern .32, and you'll be attending your funeral.

Thank you, it sure looked good on paper, but I wanted some real world experience opinions before I proceed.

I think people that have not fired one are underestimating this round. It is a very serious cartridge in a small package. I've been shooting my Model 632 for several months now; about 500 rounds of mixed factory ammo and reloads. While it is NOT a full fledged 357 Mag, it has more energy than 9mm +P (Try the American Eagle 100gr JSP and tell me it's under powered.) and lots of people around the world are satisfied with 9mm for personal defense. While I don't carry a pistol primarily for self defense, I firmly believe that someone hit in the chest with the 327 FM will immediately stop what they're doing.
Why do I have it? I have it for fun. Ammo is more available than 22LR has been lately and it is easy to reload with factory empties or brass from Starline. As I have said before on this forum, it is ideal for the hiking/ fishing trail; a "kit gun" with accuracy and real power. I have been a big fan of 44 Special for decades and the 327 won't replace that for me but it definitely fills a "Niche".
I would love to see a long barreled K frame. I hope I don't have to spend the money to have one built!

The Ruger Sp101 with the heavier weight helps on the felt recoil.
Shooting the 3" S&W model with full power 100g loads WILL get your hands attention.
The round runs at about a 20% higher peak pressure than a 357 mag.
Fun caliber.

.327 Federal Magnum

I received notification from the Henry Rifle Manufacturers just this week that they are bringing out a rife chambered for the .327 Magnum. MSRP is $899.99, Model # H006MR.327. Also believe it will also shoot the .32 H&R Magnum.

Neglected to add that its predicted to be available in March this year. (2017)

I don't see it offering any real world advantage over the 357. All the other 32 calibers don't count since most are not readily available or cheap.

I can relate some real world experience with three Ruger guns chambered for .327 Federal magnum. Shooting American Eagle factory ammo in my 8 shot Blackhawk with 5.5" barrel is great fun, especially with steel plates. In the 4" SP101, it's pretty snappy but still fun. In the LCR, it's downright painful. It makes me wonder how anyone can shoot an LCR with .357 magnum factory ammo.

Assuming that if you are interested in the .327 for self defense, you'd likely want a concealable carry gun chambered for it. The S&W J frame M632 and Ruger SP101 snubbie were discontinued years ago. The Ruger LCR would be my concealed carry choice of the three guns I have, but I would have to handload ammo for it, or use .32 H&R magnum factory ammo.

I have yet to try the Federal 85 grain personal defense hydra-shok JHP that says "low recoil" on the packaging, but it may be a usable option for factory ammo in the LCR.

Just for info, I want to note that Henry now catalogs a "Big Boy Steel" lever action chambered in .327 Federal magnum and I'll bet that it would be a pleasure to shoot.

The 357 has been around so long there are loads easily available that span the spectrum from real powder puffs all the way up to something that might threaten to burn your house down if used indoors.

That being said, I'm OK with wanting something a bit different. But to say it fills some existing empty niche because you can squeeze in another round in a cylinder, or that it has value because you can also shoot another obscure round, or even another even MORE obscure round in it....well, I guess I won't argue. The world is already full of things that go BANG! and will discourage you with a heart or liver shot.

So...fun? OK. Effective?...probably. Does something that nothing else has done up to this point?...Meh. Worthy of merchants clearing off shelf space for?....(Right in between the .318 Zowie and the .341 Bumblebee) Time will tell.
