Small of back Holsters

I resigned myself to only carry my 1911 or Beretta 92 OWB in a nice desantis holster when I have a large cover garment or when I am strictly going to the range. I carry smaller guns concealed. Just me though, to each their own...

I have thought about getting cross-draw holster for driving, but it could be pretty exposed when not driving depending on how it's made.

GT 80 I have a Andrews “carjacker” holster for a Beretta 92 and find it uncomfortable to wear in most vehicles. Seats that are fairly upright or highly adjustable aren’t too bad but a two hour drive in a relative’s Sentra was painful.

It is the one on the right.

As many have stated above, very poor choice for a number of reasons, falling on it, poor access if in a scuffle and land on your back. Very difficult to draw while seated in a chair or while driving. The last is that the further from your center or 12 O'clock position the holster is, the slower the draw. That is one of the reasons that AIWB has become so popular. I've even seen people open carrying that way which is an invitation for a gun grab and you wouldn't even see it coming.

You may never see someone coming up on you from behind when carrying in the 3 o'clock position either.

You only have one set of eyes, are you going to take time to put on safety glasses in a defensive situation using a handgun?

If I have time yes; shooting glasses, electronic hearing protection...... and body armor.............. :D

That said a decision on which holster is one made before I go out the door.... I experimented with different holsters, including a *** for about 12 years before settling on what worked best for me..... and has for the last 30+ years.

My sunglasses offer ballistic protection, and I keep my Hansen "Eagle Eye" clear shooting glasses in my car door pocket :D

Do what works for you..... you asked for our opinions and input that's what you're getting. You shouldn't complain if it doesn't agree with what you wanted to hear.

I carry my Shield 9mm or 45acp in a DeSantis Cozy Tuck in the small or 5 o'clock position all the time. I am 6'3", 240 lbs & have an "athletic build" so there is little to no bulge in my back. If someone demands my wallet their in for a surprise but I am good at paying attention to my surroundings. I squat when I pick up things (as you are suppose to taught in classes on lifting) or drop a knee. You need to watch how you get "hugged" by people or "patting" you in the back. I bend slightly & the hugger or patter reach up so they miss the gun since a Cozy Tuck sits low on the belt. In church I put the pistol in my right front pocket & 2-8 round mags in my left. I also place my Kershaw Tanto Blur in my back pocket for backup.

Now my experiences with the small of back. YES you do feel the pistol sitting in any hard seat at a restaurant in the small of your back but that's when I shift it to the 5 o'clock position. Even then you may/can fell muscle pain later from sitting against a hard seat. That seem to go away with time as you find the correct position on your belt & your posture when you sit. Yes the negs above are true but as I walk towards anyone they do not know I'm carrying & surprise of the attacker is one of your best elements to gain the upper hand. Remember the attacker is very confident if there are no visible signs of weapons & they think they have the upper hand.

Let's put it this way, is it really worth killing someone for a few bucks & credit cards? You lose the money & cancel the cards but do you want to live knowing you took a life for.... a few bucks & junk credit cards? What if there are family or friends that would like to avenge their lose by getting back at you? Want to keep looking over your should or worry they show up at your house one day or hurt YOUR family? For example, If you kill a member of MS13 you would need to change your name, move to the other side of no where & even then these gang members are everywhere. Your relatives would need to watch for even being related to you if they don't get you or your family. Unless there is a shooting going on & you can stop it, it's best to hand over your wallet or purse & Thank God your alive & it's over. But if your going to be killed, all bets are off & GUN THE ******* DOWN! Amen!

P.S. I'm not a "lay down & die Christian" so I would not hesitate to defend the innocent.

Exactly. I love it when people come here and ask for opinions and then want to argue. Makes no sense.

The average age here is probably around 55-60. Which means many of us have carried a gun for at least 20 years. That’s a lot of combined experience.

In all fairness the OP asked “ Do any of you use a small of back holster”. Out of all the posts five people admitted to owning and using this type of holster, and two of those did not do so in their first responses. Everyone else just spoke their opinion based on common belief rather than personal experience. One person stated he had a friend injured while wearing such a holster; but that person fell or was thrown from a stairwell landing. No mention of how or what he hit.

No one has posted photos of victims who sustained devastating or life altering injuries from such a holster.

It’s rather obvious that you like such holsters and feel the need defend yourself and the OP. It’s also rather obvious that most of the replies were against it. That would lead you to believe that we do not use such holsters now wouldn’t it? So we need pictures and statistics to prove our point? Since when?

Kanewpadle, I believe the design can be effectively utilized in various situations, I never said it was the greatest. I have pointed out the obvious lack of evidence that the design has maimed vast numbers of users. If a claim is made then someone should be able to validate it.

I did offer to loan the OP my holster to allow him to judge for himself. Perhaps you missed that.

I have carried a 1911 in a *** holster my cousin gave me. It is very uncomfortable while sitting on anything but a barstool. I really wanted to like it, but it didn’t work for me, just like my cousin.

The only way I would recommend it is if you are standing up behind a counter all day long while facing your customers. For that situation I think it would be great. Other than that, I think it will wind up in or begin your box of junk holsters in the bottom of your closet.

Good point

Good point, I don't carry a gun to protect my wallet, I carry a gun to protect my life and my family.

The Don Hume DAH Small of the Back holster works well for small-of-back and also strong side carry.

The best price I could find today is at Gunner's Alley ($62.56).

Small-of-the-back is absolutely THE BEST location, to have firearm
snatched.

There's another vid of a guy on line at McDonalds, who loses
his the same way--but I yain't finding it.

What I've learned from gun forums:

If you ask about a Ruger, you will see the word "tank" in the first few replies.

Guns follow people home.

Gun owners are lousy boat drivers.

If you drop a Colt 1903, you may kill a gun writer.

If you ask about a small-of-the-back holster, a host of unlicensed spine doctors will reply.

Thousands and thousands of cops wear gun belts will all kinds of stuff in the small of their backs. They are far more likely to go rolling around than the average gun toting citizen.

I don’t carry there, but if I wanted to I would, without worrying for a second about needing a wheelchair if I slipped on a banana peel.
