was in insurance agent's office [Farm Bureau Insurance] and going over policy, learned guns and jewelry are insured for total of $5000. no way to increase that coverage. that won't do it for me. agent suggested i look into NRA gun insurance. can anyone give me their opinion regarding NRA gun insurance? and i'm not going to look for another insurance company....been with Farm Bureau for 35 years.

Not impressed with the NRA's gun insurance. I admit I've only had to use it once, and the claims process wasn't too bad, but they only paid out 40% on a stolen new in the box Walter PPKS that was fully documented.

Kinda left a bad taste with me.

Oldiegoldie, check with the agent to see what perils of the policy the 5000 limit is for. Some policies have that limit for the theft peril.

State Farm did a similar cap for me like Farm Bureau did for you. Ian of "Forgotten Weapons" fame utilizes Eastern Insurance. They also cover all sorts of other collectible items. I opted for them as well. I figure a separate company to insure my firearms is a good plan since my primary insurance doesn't cut the mustard and the NRA policy limits through Lockton Affinity didn't go very high when I was checking their website, $10k or 15k if memory serves. That's two or three rifles.

With Eastern Insurance no serial numbers were required unless the firearm was over $10k by itself. If a firearm was over $50k it required an independent appraisal. Somewhere in my emails I have the details and policy.

I would suggest going to the NRA's website yourself, looking up the terms/coverage of their insurance, and making the decision of whether or not it's right for you personally.

This is a strictly Pro NRA Forum, ergo the responses you are most likely to receive here are going to be in favor of NRA Insurance.

will give Eastern ins a call Monday. i've looked at NRA's insurance terms and the price is reasonable even though their coverage is a little slim. i may have to assume the risk on part of the gun collection.
thanks for all replies.

I signed up with Eastern. The rates were reasonable and they only require serial numbers on pieces valued over $10,000. My rate did go up 50% when I moved from the Pittsburgh suburbs to Florida and they don't cover flood and there is a $5000 deductible for wind and hurricane losses.

I use Lockton. I believe it was through the NRA, but it's been so long since I have it I don't even know. I just write the check to Lockton Affinity. I don't get the 40% payout. If your coverage is $5000, the check should be for the full cost of the loss, minus any deductible you may have. Between my home coverage and the Lockton, I am more than insured for the full value of my collection.

I am an NRA member, logged onto their website and cannot find a mention of their theft insurance program. Is Eastern their provider?

I haven't looked at the NRA's coverage in years; all I can remember is that it used to be pretty skimpy. If you have anything approaching a sizeable number of guns, you will likely prefer Eastern or maybe one of the others.

I had NRA insurance since it was first introduced. A few years ago they dropped coverage in NY.

NRA's insurance wasn't to good when I checked last. Eastern has been my go to for a few years.

I have been an NRA member since 1976. I had a S&W 422 handgun stolen during a break-in in 1990 and didn't receive any compensation from their insurance whatsoever.
I will stay a member for as long as the NRA is in existence however my firearms are insured through State Farm Insurance. My insurance agent is also my FFL.

I have all of my insurance with State Farm, except firearms. As I recall, their pricing was considerably higher and they required a serial number list. Was that the case for you too?

I've used Eastern for a couple years. Their premium is shockingly inexpensive. They offer a 5% discount to members of numerous organizations, including SWCA.

Eastern Insurance was 1/2 the price of NRA insurance last I checked (this was a number of years ago). Eastern covers guns in shipment to an FFL, stolen off the shooting bench, stolen from your car, etc. The program was started by a competitive shooter (I met him once). I've used them for many years now. Eastern Insurance Group LLC, Historic Firearms Insurance | Eastern Insurance

Firearms Insurance

My guns are insured thru a rider on my Allstate Homeowners Insurance. No serial numbers required but they have to be appraised when you first get them insured, or have the origional sales reciept.

The insurance isn't cheap but fair. And yes, firearm description and serial number. Also any scopes or accessories must be listed.
