The incredible pistol used by "Dirty Harry" in the 1983 film "Sudden Impact" is supposed to be a .44(?) AutoMag.
... but if I recall correctly, the pistol used in the movie was blued - yet all I see offered for sale are stainless.
Also, if memory serves me correct, the length of that AutoMag barrel in the movie looked to be somewhat longer that those illustrated in current ads.
I don't know squat about AutoMags.
Can anyone please calrify for me whether a long-barreled blued AutoMag was ever produced for the public, or was that pistol in "Sudden Impact" some phony "prop gun"?

The gun/guns used in the movie were stainless. By the time the movie was made Auto-mags were fairly scarce and they had to actually use three guns to make two to use to shoot the movie (IIRC)
 
So which is best to blow away murderous punk crooks, an Auto Mag or a Wildey? :D

Although Deathwish 3 is a terribly cheesy film, I love it - thinking of it more as a comedy. I did some research on the Wildey gun once. Apparently some solid engineering went into it and it seemed fairly interesting. I started looking to buy one until I saw the prices.
 
Automags aren't inexpensive either...not if the prices in Gunbroker are accurate. $4k for a Pasedena .44 AutoMag ? I think I'd rather get a Mint pre-29 5-screw and get some change back to boot (?)
 
the dirty harry gun was an 8.5 in 44auto mag. have owned several of these over the years. fun to shoot but can be finicky with their choce of loads. know where there are several n.i.b. if anyone is interested. i don't own them and they aren't cheap.
 
I think its a good movie,but ''Dirty Harry'' just dont look right without his 29 or the 6'' M 19 LOL!!!!
 
A fellow student in gunsmithing school had one, he liked to load it so stinkin hot that the recoil broke parts. Never forget the time a guy asked to shoot the beast and he neglected to put his hearing protection in place over his ears. Poor guy walked around for days with a shell shocked expression on his face, he said it took a week or more till his ears stopped ringing.
 
Auto mag

The first one I ever saw was in the Fayetteville Ar NW mall at Woolworths believe it or not Woolworths, at the time they had very knowledgeable sporting goods manager, this was about 73 or 74 it was priced at about 345.00 I remember saying Man you will never sell that for that much money, I wound up buying a Ruger 77 22-250 and thinking how he was stuck with the Automag because I think you had to shorten a 06 or 308 cartridge case and ream it and then load it. Over the years I have wished a thousand times I had put that piece on lay-a-way! Jeff
 
The only Auto Mag I ever saw in use was a .357 at a metallic silhouette match. It was a terrific looking gun, but I don't think the owner ever got it to fire enough rounds to even finish the first stage much less the entire match.
 
I have had two. The one that I shot worked well. It was an early Pasadena model that I bought from Harry Sanford for $270.
 
An friend of mine in the past had an automag come apart too. He sent it back to the factory, they repaired it for free and sent it back to him. He sold it and bought several firearms with the money and never looked back!

Somebody always has to say that! :D

I used to go around saying it was a .45 Colt, since that's what the IMDB (International Movie DataBase) incorrectly says. Thanks to the Forum Members who straightened me out.
 
Nope, it was a Model 29. This subject has been beaten to death several times over the last few years. There were recent threads debunking the Model 57 myth.
