I lived near Winchester (Boyce, Va) from 2005-2007, my favorite gun shop was in Boyce, Boyce Custom Gunsmithing. The guy who runs the shop is a younger feller that can build a custom rifle from a piece of steel. He also has a gun counter, he knew I liked Smith and Wessons and would give me a call when good stuff came in. Here's a link to directions:
Custom Gunsmithing, Boyce, VA : Reviews and maps - Yahoo! Local
There's also a couple of gun shops in Winchester, but none I could reccomend. Never saw any deals in those shops.
Another interesting shop is in Middleburg, Va., not far from Winchester. Two guys are in partnership in the shop, one guy sells antique weapons, the other guy military (WW2 and older) guns. Pricing strategy is a little high, but these guys know thier stuff, they don't buy or sell fakes.

Go here for shop info.
guns winchester, va - Google Search
Here is a really good shop also. Not in Winchester but not that far. It is a great place to visit.
Clark Brothers - Home
Just to clear up my knowledge of the area. My brother lives in Stephens City, VA. I have been to several of the shops in Winchester and more than once to Clark Brothers.

Fred. Co. Firearms has a very good and knowledgable staff. They don't keep a large inventory but they can order just about anything.
Old Dominion Sporting Goods is another good spot. There is also a Gander Mtn in Winchester.
Here's a day trip. From Strausburg, take I-81 N to Exit 310 onto Rt 11/Valley Ave and head north.
1st stop: Gander Mtn on Rt behind Car Quest (at end of Commonwealth Court)
2nd stop: Continue north on Rt. 11 and stop off at Old Dominon Sporting Goods - also on right - small shopping center - beside a latino grocery. Store front is small, but the space is larger inside. Decent collection. (2828 Valley Ave)
3rd stop: Continue north a few more blocks on Rt. 11 and stop off at Stonwall Arms - also on right - Behind Rita's ice cream and dessert shop.
4 stop: Continue north on Rt 11 and turn right onto Jubal Early Drive. Follow JED a few blocks and arrive at Fred. Co. Firearms on right in brick building adjacent to golf shop and near Red White and Blue BBQ restaurant. At intersection of Loudon and Jubal Early.
5 stop: if inclined, there is a surplus store just across Jubal Early from FCF on Loudon St.- small block building. The sell clothing, duty gear, accessories, etc.

Can't speak to prices at the first two places, haven't been there in ages. Ashby Arms is heavily aligned towards black rifles, they know their stuff.

Prices must be really bad where you live. They have the occasional deal but are generally on the high side.

What zoom said...Clark Brothers is insane on their prices, at least the last time I was in there. As for the others mentioned...there aren't any good store in Winchester and I've lived here for close to 40 years so I should know. Old Dominion is almost as bad as Clarke Brothers...Stonewall blows more smoke up your backside than any of them and FCF would be a great shop if he only carried more.

Ha! I wanted to say something like that, but refrained. I almost didn't list it, but I figured since the OP was from FL, he'd be mostly just browsing anyway or just killing time while his son was elsewhere.
Since I am in WV, I just browse the Winchester shops to kill time when the wife shops for girly stuff. I often buy my ammo in Winchester during those time-wasting visits but I've never seen any really great deals on firearms at any of them.
I have bought some duty gear from FCF and they have a knowledgeable staff with great customer service - even if actual firearms inventory is quite small. They went above and beyond to try to find an item for a VA buddy of mine. If only they had a better stocked showroom...

If you are into the War of Northern Aggression, the North-South Skirmish Association is holding their spring National skirmish this week (Wednesday the the 18th through Sunday the 22nd). This is NOT a battle reenactment, but rather target shooting in period uniforms, using original and reproduction firearms. The home range is off of Rt 522 north, near the small town of Gainesbough, a few miles outside of Winchester. Guests are welcome.

I remember when Old Dominion was on Boscawen street, just before Loudoun Street (now a pedestrian mall) in Olde Town. I recall (I was a teen) looking at a brand new Colt Detective Special. They wanted over two hundred dollars for it. I thought, boy, guns are expensive!
Flash forward to the early 90s...few gun stores, and still focused on hunters. Handguns, not so much.
Quite a lot of gun stores now, and lots of handguns, much greater focus on self defense and LE oriented guns. Of course, in the mid '90s, VA became a "Shall Issue" CCW state.
For those turning up their noses at Winchester's current crop of gun shops, it's all relative...try Los Angeles. You will find hardly any gun stores in the city of LA anymore.
Winchester's a fine little town, with quite a lot of history. Washington and Custer both had their Headquarters there, once upon a time.
Say hello for me...I moved away years ago, and remember it fondly.
