The Unthinkable: XDs Replacing Custom 1911
Never thought I'd even consider it, but this little XDs in .45ACP shoots and carries so well, it just might replace my custom Colt CCO for daily carry.
capacity is only one less round
shoots just as accurately out to 50yds
lighter and more slender
Forgive me, John Moses Browning, for I have sinned.

doc ... Have you found the extended mag to pose any problems concealment-wise? I've stuck with the two stock flush mags thus far, and am quite pleased with them.

Pearce Grips
This extension is a little better looking, and a little bit more concealable. It saved my life with the XD sub-compact since I have bigger hands. I highly recommend it!

Pretty is as pretty does doc. The XDs does the job with less grief if its dropped, confiscated, or God forbid stolen. Dale

Gee Doc, we may have to sign you up for an exorcism, I did see one of Turnbull's "plain" 1911s, at Cabela's last week, it was singing my song. XD's are fine for workin dogs, but they don't sing, although the first time I shot an XD .40, well, I shot it better than anything I had ever shot before, and I was tryin not to??? billy

I agree with everything here about the XDs but will add that especially in summer, I don't worry about sweat damage like I do with my Kimber Ultra Raptor II.
The XDs is softer shooting, lighter, carries better is equally accurate and reliable. It has become my main EDC.
To get my pinky on the grip I added Pearce extenders. They work great and don't impact carry size (if you are ok with the 5 round mags).

Next to a real, '59 Burst, they have my favorite tone.
(I'd like to hear that hollowbody.)
But I'm just a bass player.

ETW holster arrived today
not as well made as an Adams Leather, but fits well, rides well, and is comfortable....well worth the money, $45 shipped
Also, bought a High Noon Split Decision High Ride Tuckable, and it'll work in a pinch if I have to tuck my shirt tail.
Powder River extended safety, CT laser (haters save your breath)
Polished the trigger/action pieces when I installed the safety, trigger is perfect for carry, still accurate out to 50 yards.
The custom Colt 1911 is in the nightstand, the XDs is on my hip.
I'm not too old to change horses when it makes sense.

I know you Doc....nice XD but that gun is not you....I can tell from this thread you are really trying but I give it 2 months and you'll be back to the 1911...I can hear his little muffled pleas from here...."Doc, open the nightstand and take me with you."

Well, if the past is any indication of the future...
This little piece reminds me of a 1911 in its grip angle, thin profile, and accuracy.
I can't help it if it just SHOOTS so darned good.

I dont think anything in my stable will ever replace the colt 1911.
I'd be willing to sell the whole stable before any of the 1911's left for a new home.
I'd even be willing to get rid of my ole lady before i got rid of the 1911's. My ole lady is great, but unlike my 1911's SHE is replaceable. The make plenty of women in this world, but they just dont make a finer 1911 than a Colt. And those plastic toys just arent the same as the ole trusty 1911.

I have a Norinco which shoots better than a standard mil-spec Colt, and as well as my Gold Cup. I didn't expect it to, and I didn't want it to, but it does. It doesn't make my heart go pitter-patter like the Colts, but it's the one I use if I want all the holes to touch. I don't have an xD, but I "get" it. I have a completly soul-less Glock slug-throwing appliance, and it shoots great, too. Again, no pitter-patter in the chest, but holes touching on the paper.

Okay, first off all, did you consult your doctor right away?
If yes and you still don't change your mind, I'll take your CCO!

Just the beginning of this year I got a XDs.45 and I positively love the little blaster. I carry it IWBH with the short mag and carry a longer mag for a spare. I replaced my decade’s long carry of a full size 1911 for this gun. I did that for a couple reasons. One reason is I have moved way out in the boonies and as many of the problems of the cites/burb area I left stayed there.
Another reason I was a rather big rather fluffy person and had no problem at all concealing a full size 1911 but since I dropped 80# my concealment options have changed.
I wanted a smaller gun and it appeared even though it’s a striker fire the XDs fit my criteria for a small powerful go to town gun.
I also have a Bodyguard.380 with a DeSantis pocket holster and that is perfect for easy carry in the little town/area I now live in. My full sized 1911 is now more or less a safe queen, but if a serious SHTF problem/s arrive I will be back with the full size and perhaps carry the XDs as a backup.

Note: not carrying the CCO daily doesn't necessarily translate into getting rid of it.

I carry--often--the new SW M&P Slim thingy, but it does not replace my all metal autos or revolvers--it does supplement them.
I carry sans a scabbard without a concealment issue with either the Norinco or the Sig P220 and for me the weight is not a problem. Now, I don't carry 24/7 but I do carry ALL THE TIME I AM OUT OF MY HOUSE.
I kinda like the feel of the weight actually.
Blessings

Don't blame you!
true story:
Last month I was shooting a 50yd centerfire silhouette match with my 629.
Since all guns on the line have to be cold, I cleared my CCO, locked back the slide, and just laid it on the bench.
During a five shot string I had a squib on my third shot.
Without really thinking about it, I picked up the CCO and proceeded to ping the last three metal targets.
I give all the credit to John Moses Browning, Bar-Sto, and my gunsmith.
(I shoot the 629 in both iron and optics classes)

That's a fact Jack about my Chinese norinco 1911a1 too. I purchased a well used one and fitted a national match barrel bushing $12 and a surplus usgi $59 barrel and she now shoots clover leads at 25yds. I do all my own work. My cheapest 1911 to purchase turns out to be my best one and it's made in China too. I purchase every norinco gun I see, from the tokarev's, to the sks's, to the m14's they all rock.
My norinco 1911 is better than any new colt I had that didn't function right out of the box or the sights came loose. Even my new python had cylinder timing problems. You can't ride on your name forever.
I'm just not ready to go plastic yet. I still have a hard time with paper or plastic bags when shopping.
Since the plastic pistols are lighter how does that effect the recoil?

I love my XDs! With the 7-round mag it feels like a Commander. I do sometimes carry a Delta Elite, Kimber, or SIG 1911, and a Ruger Commander is on my short list. With a GCNM, but most of the time I go with the XDs or a Glock. The little thing just disappears in the XDS Gear pancake that came with it, and it seems to jump into my hand and point dead-on for me too.
Of course, I'm one of those that actually likes Glocks....so what is my opinion worth?

The more I shoot my XDs the more convinced I become that this is a very viable CC weapon. I haven't carried any other handgun for at least 2 months. It is confidently reliable, has manageable recoil, terrific sight acquisition and is extremely accurate on initial and follow up shots.
IMHO, there's nothing not to like about this handgun. I've given thought to trading my 9mm Shield for a XDs 9. If the Shield wasn't my wife's fav, I believe it would be history for the Springfield.

Update:
All XDs pistols were recalled.
After 60 days mine arrived back with a different trigger/action system.
I did all the right things: cleaned, lubed, dry fired, range fired.
Today, my gunsmith examined it and explained the new spring system is the reason for the degraded trigger/action, not the spring tension...the design.
Sold it this evening.

OP, sorry for this little bit of thread drift!
Kozmic, great pics as always! I had a Rickenbacker bass just like the one in your pic. It was a cool bass, but I ended up selling it. A friend wanted it more than I did, & it just didn't work for the way I played, stylistically.

I've been carrying the CCO again for two months while the XDs was at SA.
After selling the XDs last night, I'll just use the Kahr CM9 when I need "small and light".

Interestingly, when I punched my XDs serial number on the recall page of the SA site it said mine wasn't a part of the recall. I did this twice just to be sure.
I would hate to have had mine altered by the recall/rework. I do love this as a everyday CC piece.

I made the same decision when I started caring an M&P. I found accuracy dropped off while shooting with the requisite paper bag over my head though. Plastic sure is ugly. :-)

Wee Hooker: I know what your mean. I went out this afternoon with a friend. He brought a Colt Govt Model in 9mm P, and another in 38 Super. I brought my slightly tweaked Series 70, a Combat Commander and a RIA compact, all in 45. Good shooting; not one single malfunction. Great guns.
