I ended up with one today. It is a Ducks Unlimited gun, missing the case. Arrived to me unfired with the factory mounted and boresighted 3x9x40 scope. I think the scope was made by Simmons, but it is labeled Mossberg. It is done in a silver finish to match the stainless (?) action of the rifle. There is a grayish laminate wood stock. Caliber is .300 Winchester mag, fed via a detachable mag.

Never owned a .300 Mag before. It was part of a deal that got me a snub 19-3 and an import 1911 that I wanted. The Mossberg that I know nothing about, 2 SKS rifles and an old Savage 67E 20 gauge pump came with that which I actually wanted.

There's a paucity of information on the Mossberg 4x4 series that turns up via google. Apparently .300 Winchester mag ammo isn't all that terribly expensive. The most potent centerfire rifle I have now is probably technically a 7.62x54R, but I have two .308 rifles.

If I trade the 4x4 to a friend I can get a stainless Ruger Bisley Vaquero .357 Mag with South African buffalo horn grips. It's a nice gun, had an action job, I used to own it in fact. A bubba'd 303 Enfield formerly mine would come with. I'd throw in the Savage 67E, an old Mossberg bolt action 20 ga I have and a can of 20 ga ammo plus one of 12 ga ammo. Eh. I'm ambivalent.

Are these 4x4 rifles worth having? Seems pretty. But won't recoil be a bit much for fun shooting and is the .300 Win Mag overpowered for anything (other than Sasquatch of course) to be found in South Carolina?

The Vaquero is a nice shooting gun and attractive but... eh. I don't generally shoot SA revolvers and I'd have to buy a cowboy/gunslinger rig for it if I had it again... not wanting to buy that is why I traded it to begin with.

The two 20 gauges are I suppose just hardware guns. Tools, nothing special, not that valuable. Same with the Enfield. It sat in a guy's garage under a woodpile (literally) forgotten for years and I got it for basically nothing. I cut the wood where it was horrible, added some parts from a bent bbl jungle carbine that came with it, painted the whole thing, and called it good. Well semi good. The rear sight is wired on and the rust was stopped with Rustoleum.

I didn't find it to be a keeper. The gray laminate stock showed some short cuts in finish and the "Mossberg" labeled scope - actually a Simmons from what I've read - seemed cheap.

I traded it to get my Ruger back. Though the mutant Enfield built out of parts from two broken rifles is more fun.

The new owner of the Mossberg shot it a few times, liked the accuracy, didn't like the scope and wasn't thrilled with the recoil. I don't know if he still has it or not. I think he traded it for a reloading set up.

They seem readily to be had on gunbroker, et al, though I personally wouldn't pay what seems to be the standard asking price.
