Winchester has initiated a voluntary recall of M*22™ 22 Long Rifle 40 Grain Black Copper Plated Round Nose rimfire ammunition, Symbol Number S22LRT with a lot number containing GD42L or GD52L. Winchester has determined the above lots of 22 Long Rifle rimfire ammunition may contain double powder charges. Ammunition with double powder charges may subject the shooter or bystanders to a risk of serious personal injury and/or death, or cause firearm damage, rendering the firearm inoperable.
We have identified all suspect lot numbers and are implementing a nation-wide consumer recall. This notice applies only to Symbol Number S22LRT with Lot Numbers GD42L and GD52L. Other Symbol Numbers or Lot Numbers are not subject to this recall.

If you have any of this ammo, please do not shoot it and contact Winchester ammo right away.

Thank you for posting this, as I've got some of this ammo that I have not fired yet! I need to check the numbers to see if it matches...

This figures, as it's the only .22s I've been able to buy in the last year. I'm well stocked with .22s, but grabbed some of these Winchesters when I saw them available.

Thanks again for the heads-up!

Man, I hope they find both boxes that were sold.

But seriously, I just saw some of this ammo posted on another board last night for sale. Now I'l have to go back over there and give them a heads up I suppose. Thanks for posting this.

bluejax01:

Muchas Gracias! I've had one double charged .22 about 3 years ago in my M18. Thankfully the M18 is a pretty strong gun so there was no damage to the gun, but I did suffer 8 or 9 cuts on my face, hands and ear. When I opened the cylinder the shell case was actually not there! It blew out in very small pieces and I guess that's what cut me up.

The round I had trouble with back then was A Winchester Wildcat and while there was a recall I was unaware of it as I fired the ammo years after it was produced. When I contacted Winchester they offered to pay any medical expenses I might have had, have the gun sent back to S&W for a full check and issued me a call tag to sent back the remaining 5 Bricks for exchange which I did. As it turned out I did not need to go to the Doctor, and I checked out the gun myself (all was fine) and they promptly replaced the ammo and sent me a letter of apology. I felt that they handled things well, seemed truly concerned and I do realize that even though they manufacture ammunition, ANY COMPANY that produces mass quantities of ANYTHING can have these things happen. On an assembly line 1000 or so rounds go by VERY QUICKLY! Thankfully they have chosen to do the right thing here once again.

I have a 1000 rounds of that I found the S22LRT on the box but I don't see any lot #.

I just checked again the only # I see is on the bottom
of the box but it is printed on just like all the other printing the # is RCLR117
E129998
K7508 but it doesn't say lot #

From the Winchester Web Site:

"DO NOT USE WINCHESTER® M*22™ 22 Long Rifle RIMFIRE AMMUNITION WITH LOT NUMBERS GD42L or GD52L. The ammunition Lot Number is imprinted (stamped without ink) on the left tuck flap of the 500-round carton as indicated here. The 1000-round intermediate carton does not have a Lot Number.

To determine if your ammunition is subject to this notice, review the Symbol Number and Lot Number. If it is Symbol Number S22LRT with a Lot Number containing GD42L or GD52L immediately discontinue use and contact Winchester toll-free at 866-423-5224 or visit http://www.winchester.com/Product-Service/Pages/Contact-Us.aspx for free UPS pick-up of the recalled ammunition."

The 1000 round box does not have a lot number.

Are there two - 500 round boxes inside? They should have the lot numbers.

If not, I'd call them before I shot any.

Argh. Must check my stash tonight.

They better be offering up-front replacement with good ammo, not just refund & "free pickup," or I suspect there will be hell to pay; a refund's not much good when there's no way to buy replacement product!

Is this the only Winchester 22 being recalled? I gave around 1,800 rounds of it to two of my Nephews as part of their Christmas gifts.

I found the # it's on the outside of the left tab when you open the box, I should have turned on a light, it's a little hard to see on a black box. I'm OK.
