A Knife for the Bug Out Bag?

I don't have a bug-out bag, my day pack has a camp ax, a leather man tool, a K-bar, my water bottle, with a water filter, fire starting device, a poncho, 550 cord, a few protein bars. This is for a day in the woods. My Buck 110 is on my belt.

Before I talk about a Bug Out Bag I must discuss my EDC Knives.

When ever I leave my place I ALWAYS am carrying the following:
A Swiss Army Knife, one with 2 blades, sisssors, wine opener, can opener bottle opener, etc. a SOG Flash II, given to me by a cowooker as a retirement present, and a Cold Steel Voyager 5" given to me personally by Lynn Thompson. I NEVER go anywhere without these 3 knives.
At home I carry the FlashII and the Cold Steel 100% of the time.

When hunting I will carry other knives, but these 3 go EVERYWHERE with me.

As I am Retired, and live in the Toolies, I am not going to Bug Out, I am Bugging In.

I always have in my Truck, a Hatchet, a Machette, and a Woodsmans Pal.

When I travel to a country where I cannot carry a handgun I carry a Randall Mod 14, in addition to my EDC trio above, and what ever other game butchering knives I might need.

I will also add that I put myself through College as a Butcher, and still butcher all of the game I shoot, so I am "somewhat familar" with how knives "work".

Added info.

I am going to Australia. Where I have discovered they have some Unique knife laws.
You cannot have ANY pocket knife designed to be opened with one hand.

So for my Aussie trip, I will be taking a Cold Steel knife called the Black Rock Hunter, also given to me by LynnThompson, it cannot be opened by one hand, sadly discontinued, also a Puma Feather, and my Swiss Army knife.

I will be carrying the Randall Mod 14 as well.

It depends on what kind and how BIG the bugs are in your bag.:)

I personally like the large Swiss Army with lots of tools that are not on a leatherman. A big sheath knife (K Bar) has one use.

I guess it depends on how much weight you want to carry. This is a bug out bag after all and weight is important.

There is only one knife that is necessary; some kind of multi-tool. This is a knife that will be used in a pinch and the multi-tool fits that purpose.

Now, if you're willing to carry a heavy bag, then there are other knives to consider as well, but the multi-tool is enough for most situations.

Knives in the B-O-B? I have the KA-BAR that dad carried as a Marine in Korea, a couple of small folders (Under 3.5" blades) and an OLFA SILVER Cutter (Razor knife).

In the truck under the back seat is an 18" Ontario machete I got at an Army Surplus store about 30 years ago, a no name (?) brand axe and a Marble's 10" blade Trailmaker I bought from Dave Shirley (R.I.P.) about ten years ago. I bought a BUNCH of original Marble's and a few original Scagel's from Dave Shirley before he passed in 2010. His limited reproductions of original Marble's and Scagel knives were every bit as good or better than the originals. Sadly all but 4 or 5 of the original Marble's and 1 Scagel are gone.

The folder I carry every day is a Dave Shirley 2002 limited reproduction (#1 of 100) of the Marble's Safety Folder.

For sharpening, under the back seat I have a 6" novaculite stone for the knives and a file for the axe and machete. In the B-O-B I have a double sided 6" diamond impregnated stone.

I'm sure that was just an accidental bump of the space bar, but really. A "leather man tool"?

That just sound SO wrong.

Cold Steel Bushman. Why? Well, I can't afford a Randall, and I would hate to lose either my Buck 119 or KaBar to theft. But I wouldn't cry much if I lost the Bushman, and it's not expensive to replace.

The sheath has a pocket that will hold a stone or a multitool, and of course I echo the usual stuff about a folder and a multitool always in my pocket, blah, blah, blah.

Last but not least, the handle is hollow, so you can jam a stick or shovel handle in there and have a spear, not necessarily lethal for zombies, but at least you can hold them at a distance while somebody takes a head shot.

BUG KNIVES

After an unscheduled overnight campout when young I carry a few items to get me through 1-3 days: fire starter, compass, whistle, multitool, matches/lighter, cotton balls soaked in vasseline, space blanket, not enough food/water (too heavy), but some. Small & light enough to ALWAYS HAVE WITH. For a true bug out bag I'd go cheap & light & have several to barter for food/water, likely Mora knives. like jumping out of a perfectly good airplane, if the house isn't on fire I'll sit it out. Maybe move from the mancave closer to the liquor cabinet. If you want some, come get some.

I've been very impressed with the Gerber LMF2. American made, good sheath @$100.

Of course, my Randall, leatherman, and SAK are first choices.

I suggest you pack a good Leatherman tool, a Swiss Army Knife (Farmer) and carry a fixed blade Ka-Bar in a sheath on your belt or strapped to your BOB.

I always have a Gerber Multi-tool or a SAK on me, except when in shower or bed( and a few times then too). In the B-O-B there is a M-3 Ka-Bar. In the truck all kinds of cutting things. The M-3 will hold up to a lot more than just cutting, It will pound, pry and(cringe) dig as well as any other "survival" Knife and lots better than the deer camp knives. I'm at 3 WWII or Korea aged M-3's and a 1980's production knife. No comparison! When my oldest delayed enlisted in the Army in 1998, he found a older M-3 that served the same family in the Pacific Islands, Korea, and Vietnam. He used it as a Blackhawk crew chief in Iraq, and it has been to Afghanistan with 2 other men. A real good knife can serve several generations. Ivan

What do the Aussie knife laws say about sheath knives?
