Savage 110 30-06

Does anybody have any reviews, pros/cons, etc. on the Savage 110 in 30-06? Its from 1998 and has the "packaged" Simmons scope. It is in excellent condition with one small ding in the stock. He took a doe with it last year, 265 yards aparently. I would be using this mainly for WI deer hunting up to 200 yards. I reload 30-06 too, so ammo will be cheap(er). I would be trading him straight up for an EOTech 512, I value around $340 or so. Is this a decent trade? From what I read, the 110 has excellent reviews. I've been in need of a deer rifle for a while now, as I sold my last 30-06 a couple years ago. Thanks in advance!

Savage 110

I have a Savage 110 lefthand model in 30-06 and it is a good deal in my opinion. I think I paid about that for my package about 15 yrs ago. They are well made for the price.

Are you still using the Simmons scope, or did you switch it out?

I would be all over that rifle and that price. They are excellent utility grade rifles, greatly under appreciated. My Son and I are both left handed. His first big game rifle was a LH 110 in .308, he still has it. He also has a LH 7mm Rem Mag. I have a LH 111 in .223. All three do what they are supposed to. My 111 was a package deal also with a Simmons scope. It is still on and it works for what I use it for......shooting Prairie Rats and Coyotes out the back door. I also have some High End big game rifles but the Savages are just as good, just not a pretty.

Sorry for the poor image quality, but here are a couple pics he sent me. The nick is on the right side, about an inch under the ejection port. He said he will throw in a box of shells too.

$350 for any major manufacturer bolt action in decent shape is probably a good deal. It appears the low end scope worked for you, and will probably continue to be fine for years to come. You can always upgrade the scope if you want or need to. All the scopes I've used have been purchased separately from the rifles and I switch them out from time to time. The price quoted is good for the rifle without a scope.
 
My best friend had a late 60's early 70's, Left hand, 30-06, clip fed, M110. Somebody had set up Redfield "Olympic" competition sights. With 130 grain handloads he shot ground hogs out to 500 yards if the wind wasn't too contrary. The more recent 110's are still that good, but some barrels aren't up to those feats. The barrels are easy to change out as is the bolt face. You can easily make it into anything from 223 to 458 Win Mag. It may or may not do 375 H&H lengths. I gave a 110 left hand 223, to my second son as a welcome home gift when he left the Marines. When I Zeroed the cheap scope before I gave it to him; I had several 3 shot groups less than a dime at 100 yards, with factory ammo. That was about 2005. Ivan

The only downside would be the condition of the bore. If it has been fired a lot and not cleaned carefully, there could be scratches in the bore or the rifling could be damaged. Even so, the barrel can be replaced.

I think it's a good deal. I'd give $340 for the sight too.
 
How much do these list for now?

I believe there were mossberg and Remington within the same price ranges too. I've heard nothing but good things about the savage bolt actions.

Oh, just for reference, I bought a new Savage Model 11 chambered in .308Win with a 24" Varmint contour barrel. I paid $550 for it and it had a Bushnell 3-9x40 scope on it. It has the Accutrigger and I have it adjusted as light as it will go.

At 50 yards a friend put three rounds through one hole. At 100 yards I've fired a .75" 3 round group. I expect a better shooter than I could do better. I see no reason why this 30-06 wouldn't do just as well or better.
 
My Savage 110

I got my 110 used sometimes in the 80's and paid about $180 for it in a fairly nice zippered case and the 4w scope. What can you say about them? They are simple but sturdy. They ain't purty but they work well. My rifle yells at me....."Deer rifle".

I have a 112BVSS in .30-06. It's got the heavy varmint barrel. They didn't make many of them, and as far as I know, haven't made any for years. It's the hunting counterpart of the 110FP sniper, which also used to be available in .30-06. It's EXTREMELY accurate at six hundred yards.

It's got a 1-10" twist and loves 200gr. Sierra Matchkings.

I'm a BIG Savage fan, and also have a 10FP sniper in .308. A friend has one in .260, also discontinued, I believe.

Savage is one of the best buys on the gun market.
 
They are less than beautiful and have a soft wood stock. Birch, IIRC. They are also some of the most accurate rifles you will ever shoot. You get to decide which if those statements is important to you. I have a couple of Savages.
