Default ARRRRRGH--NEED A NEW POCKET KNIFE

I had a contractor send over some guys to set some 4x6's for me.
When they left--so did my Benchmade. Needless to say--nobody knows nuttin. Had it about 8-10 years. price has really gone up
The knife was a little large but it was one hand opening. I like that !
Too many times I only have one hand handy when I need the knife.
It was a 3" blade--but I don't want to go smaller than 2 1/2---I don't think.
It was a good knife---I suppose it is still a good knife.
Benchmade has some auto opening.
Don't need a fancy knife and I am not a collector----guess that is the reason I am not as upset--pissed is a better term
Got some other suggestions.
Blessings

I want to get a drop point Benchmade Mini Griptilian to replace my Tanto blade Benchmade Mini Griptilian. It's maybe a year old, and I'd be willing to sell the one I have for say $55 shipped if you're interested. PM me if you want to see pics. I can e-mail them.

Stay safe, John

I like my Gerber easy out, available in a part saw tooth or smooth blade. Light-slim-and easy to employ, as the name says.

I recently had an encounter with a thief also lately, sorta sucks. Anyhoo, may I suggest a look at what CRKT has to offer, good quality knives at a reasonable price.

Automatic (switchblades) are legal in Texas now. I'd go with a good quality automatic just for the fun and handiness of it. Of course I carry a two hand opening SAK that I've had for more than 20 years now. Maybe I'm a hypocrite.

Take a look at the Gerber BG knives.

I picked up the compact, 3.6" blade for work. It's thin, rubberized, US made, and so far, pretty tough. $14.95

The Scout has a 4" blade and one hand opening. $17.95

They're both orange, so they're easy to find if you set them down.
Both are available at wally world.

My main knives are a Benchmade and a SOG, both autos. You're right, they have gotten pretty expensive.

I had no idea what the BG meant until I bought mine. I still would have purchased it. At work, I want as thin a knife as possible.

IMO, Benchmade is hard to beat. A little more money than some but a good value. Well made and their customer service is outstanding.

I broke the clip on one. They fixed it for free. I just had to pay shipping. And they sharpened it too.

You might want to look into one. On Amazon they run about $115, but worth every penny.

When it comes time to pay the contractor deduct the price of a new Benchmade off the bill. Put a note in with your payment stating this is what happens when you employ thieves.

My favorite Benchmade is a Mini Barrage; not an auto, but it is assisted. The Mini Griptilian is another nice one; don't have one but wish I did.

For a bit less money, Kershaw makes some knives I like, many of them assisted with flippers. My kids are always tickled to get one for a birthday or Christmas.

As for your knife that walked off, I'd put the screws to your contractor. He is bonded for a reason. Ask him who wrote his bond. He may prefer to make it good himself.

Of course you don't need a fancy knife for EDC, but a nice knife can be a pleasure to handle. Then, too, there is something to be said for "Made in U.S.A.", even if a $15 Chinese knife will give you all the utility you need.

William, I feel your pain.

I've EDC a Snap-On "Chubby" (made by Kershaw) for the last decade. One night while plowing my driveway I got stuck in the snowbank. The next day I could not find my knife. I went out and looked through the snowbank where I was stuck, but had no luck finding it.

Luckily I had a bran new one still in the box. I started carrying it but really missed my old friend. A few months later after the snow was all gone I went out and looked for it one more time. And once again had no luck finding it.

Now I was thinking it was gone for ever. I still missed it every time I used the new one. We sure get attached to things.

Once the weather warmed up I was putting my cold weather gear in the closet. While going through the pockets of my jacket....... I found my old friend
So I quickly put it on my belt where it belongs and put the now lightly used one back in the box.

Apparently I had caught the belt clip while climbing in and out of the truck (this has happened a few times over the years) and put it in my jacket pocket so I would not lose it.

So keep your chin up your old friend may return to you some day when you least expect it.

In this world a man must either be anvil or hammer.

Someone else mention the Kershaw OSO Sweet knife for about 20 bucks and its a very well designed, sleek, and compact assisted opening knife. It is my current favorite and I have had a lot of pocket clip folding knives. Benchmade is a good knife and will stay sharp a little longer than most common cheaper knives (Kershaw, Buck, Gerber, Camillius, etc) but it is MUCH more expensive.

One more vote here for Kershaw. I have two spring assist Kershaws that I carry at different times, for different jobs. They have kept a sharp edge, can be flicked open with one finger, and were very affordable.

Without recommending a particular knife, I have recently moved to a Wharncliffe shaped blade for my EDC, and have found it to be very practical.

You will be well served by the brands: Benchmade, Spyderco, Kershaw, or CRKT.

What do you use your knife for? The tool will vary with the planned task.

Below are a couple of my Benchmade knives. The black one is an Auto Stryker and the Green one is a Griptilian. I like them both, but they are a little big for EDC for some.

Other than a Swiss Army Knife and a Douk Douk, I quit bothering with folders. A nice fixed blade knife put on the belt is an easy solution. A smallish 4" Mtech model does nicely, the sort popular for Bushcraft. It costs less than ten dollars. They are a solid piece of 440 so there is not a lot to go wrong.

The auto-open thing has always been like carrying a gun---just words no one paid any attention to or enforced.
The lost one was an auto-open from 10 years ago and was bought with no questions asked from a police supply store .

I hate thieves.

I always have a knife or two all the time. At the moment, I rotate between two different 3" Benchmade automatics and also carry a very small Gerber or Buck. When people ask if they can use my knife, I usually ask if they're cutting stuff or people . . .

For a cheap knife you can't beat MTech, I sell hundreds of them a year, both A/0 and the fixed blades.

For quality any of the brands mentioned in the previous posts are good. Just decide on the size and type of blade you want and go from there.

My late husband was a lifetime Member of the National Knife Collectors of America(NKCA) and in his opinion Benchmade was the finest factory production knife made.

just my 2 cents

The knife I pictured above is not a switch blade, nor is it a spring assist. It can be opened two ways. First, the thumb hole can be used. Second, the AXIS lock can be pulled back and the blade just "flicked" open. The time difference between flicking this one open vs a true switch blade would have to be measured in micro seconds.

Yeah, I like one hand opening knives as well. Alas, my favorite, the Balisong, is illegal in CA.

If you like a small fixed-blade knife the Bark River Mini-Canadian is hard to beat. Tough, good ergonomics and blade shape, ferociously sharp and easy to strop back to sharp, even on the leg of your jeans. I carried mine in a wallet-shaped hip pocket sheath until I gave it to my son.

I carry either a flat-ground Spyderco Endura (mostly) or a SOG Flash II assisted opener, clipped in a back pocket. The Flash II is a very nice knife for the money, but the Spyderco is better and has a more secure clip.

Most days I also carry a Victorinox Super Tinker of Pioneer for the tools. If not one of those I'll carry a four-inch stockman pocketknife--Schrade Old Timer (old U.S. manufacture), Cold Steel Country Classic (made by Camillus before they folded), or Case.

I go thru EDC knives pretty fast. Lose them mostly out in the pasture where they get covered up in waste hay. Once in a while one finds its way back home. I love U.S. made Kershaws; for their steel, their edge holding and for the cost:benefits ratio especially. Recently I was sharpening knives with my kid and said I wished I had a Kershaw with a true straight blade so he found this one for me for Christmas. Might be a bit big for an EDC for some but not for me.

I use a knife daily--well almost daily--on somethin---most normally what most folks would want me hung and quartered for.
Ever loose the lead on a pencil while playing golf--need to get staples out of a box--clean the dirt off you shoes--pick your teeth in a pinch--on christmas eve around our place they count on my knife--drive a tack-- not to mention some of those things they put in plastic containers or batteries---hell, I wish I had one just a minute ago-thank God for a toe-nail clipper.
I got a small one that is good but tha dang ol thang is too small.
I need a real knife.
Blessings

Another vote for the Mini Griptilian. if I anticipate rougher use I'll pick up the Emerson Horseman. Emersons will blister your thumb breaking them in but good knives.

I was raised that a gentleman always has a pocket handkerchief and a knife with him. I guess I'm only 50% a gentleman because I always have a knife with me, but rarely a handkerchief.

There have been days when I forgot my knife at home for one reason or another. I'm very agitated when I discover my knife missing. Did I lose it? What if I need one?

I'm always surprised when I have a man ask me, "Why do you carry a knife?" They have been trained that if you carry a knife you must want to hurt someone. I've never wanted to stick someone with a knife, but I use mine all the time for...oh, I don't know, to cut stuff?

Case knives are made in the USA. That's all I need to know when I need a knife. Of course I don't need one as I have plenty.

I have to say I love my Smith & Wesson folder, I know its not on the level of the Benchmade but I can't afford one of those. I tell you my new favorite knife is the Cold Steel Finn Bear. For what I paid for it is tough as nails. I know where they are made, but I have a hard time trying to afford a higher end knife and I have had good luck with what I have now. Gutted and butchered up a couple of deer already with the Finn Bear and its the best I have used in a lot of years.

I really like my Kershaw...but if I had to do it over again I would lose the metal handles and go with something less slippery...and if I could do it over twice, I would find another SOG Mini-xray...I loved that knife....

I've been carrying a Queen Steel #11 since in the navy in '64. One blade and does all I need a pocket knife to do.

If you like Benchmade, I'm very happy with my Model 710, but it has a four-inch blade that may be longer than you want. They have a smaller version in the M-705. I'd look hard at that if you like a classical look.

I wear a lockblade folder in a belt pouch and a Swiss Army knife in my pocket.

I have had several items "stolen" only to have them turn up later. I had misplaced them myself.

I feel your pain. My Spyderco Delica disappeared one day, probably due to my own carelessness. I've been carrying an Endura ever since, and it's a little large, but it works fine. Then on a trip to VT we wandered into the facility where they sell surplus property, like old computers, filing cabinets, etc. And they also sell all the sharp stuff that gets confiscated at the airport. The only real knife among the nail files and junk was a Delica, missing its clip, but with a pristine AUS 8 blade. The price was right.
You might try fleabay for a replacement. Some of those folks buy the TSA knives by the bushel and resell them.

I'm gonna go look for my X-ray again...I know I had it in April before I left for Cuba and I kind of think I stashed it somewhere away from the kids.....but I looked everywhere...except where it is of course...

Oh, good point about those confiscated knives. A guy had several buckets of those at a gun show. I rummaged carefully and got some nice Swiss Army knives, mainly Vics, but a few Wengers. Prices ranged from $3-7, depending on size and complexity. Some looked to have been new when confiscated. I did buy a new SOS kit to fit the SwissChamp that I bought so cheaply and shined up with Simichrome polish. I've used every tool on it, I think. I still have a couple that I need to finish polishing some scratches off of. But the work is going well, when I have time for it.

Of course, the thicker Swiss knives are for briefcase or pack carry; not for one's pocket.

Recently, found a folder that I'd carried daily for ten years, but had been missing for last three or so years. While looking hard for another missing item, I found this missing knife under the treadmill that we use for clothes hanging.:roll eyes:

I am assuming I misplaced it---I can get mad at me.
The contractor was paid when they left. I can't get mad at him as he wasn't here.
Heck fire--It is a Thing---lots of better things to get mad about.
Still burns my butt so I need to get a new one and get over it---probably will find the old one soon after I get the new one---then I will be hot.
Seems like the older you get the more you like to be aggrivated.
Blessings

Just picked up a CKRT Desert Hammond Cruiser.

I used to carry a CKRT Drifter, but wanted something a little larger that fit my hands better.

The Hammond is great for an inexpensive EDC option.

Honestly, I can't get too excited about knives. To me they are like shovels and hammers, just tools. I have 5 or 6 pocket knives laying around the place and $30 is all I will ever pay for one. The one I carry now was on sale at Cabelas for $15. It says Smith and Wesson on it but I think it was made in China or maybe Turkistan. If I paid $150 for a knife it would disappear in 3 days.
