As you know from a couple of my last posts I'm looking to pick up a small automatic. Not for my EDC, I carry a 640 Pro. I've considered the Beretta 950 BS, Seecamp 32. And had some great advice from members here. I came across a Beretta 21A 25 new in box, with 2 extra mags. If you guys can give me any opinions on this gun it would be great. The best thing about this forum is the amount of experience people have with other guns then S & W. The price seemed high $499.00 but the prices seem high on all these mouse guns when they are new. Thanks in advance.

The price does seem high but the 21A and 950 have been discontinued
by Beretta I believe and we all know what that does to prices. The 21A
is basically just a double action version of the 950 but the recoil spring
system is quite different. I have a few 950s but have never owned a
21A so don't know about the reliability. 21As are quite popular and
usually sell quickly. The 21A retains the tip up barrel of the 950 and
the recoil spring system is better and stronger so all in all it's a
winner.

I have a Beretta 21A in 25acp. I've never carried it. Mine is difficult to shoot accurately. At the range, it is reliable but not much fun to shoot. I bought mine used a couple of years ago for $200.

I have a .22 21a, it has always worked well. The tip up barrel is a nice feature. One thing to remember is there is no ejecter, if the brass gets stuck in the chamber you need to poke it out with a rod of some sort.

I have the .22 cal.version nice gun, very reliable unlike many small auto's but...I would not use it for defense (or any .22 cal.for that matter)

I have owned a few of the Berettas, but

$499.00 is a lot of money for a pocket Beretta. I would look at the Seecamp .32 a.c.p. or the Kahr .380 pistols.

To the OP, I just wanted to point out that as a LEO, you should be able to buy a S&W Shield for under $350.00. Size wise, a bit larger than a Beretta 21A but not so much...sort of like comparing the Glock 19/26 pistols.

Not the best photo, since I took it, but my brother's Beretta 950 in the upper right near his S&W 469. The Shield, especially with the shorter mag, is smaller than the 469. The difference would be minimal.

The other guns are a Charter Arms Bulldog, S&W 36, AMT B/U .45 a.c.p.

I owned 2 of the 21a, both 25 cal...$200 a piece, one came with 3 mag's and a nice gun rug..I sold them for $250 a piece..
I went for a KT 380 for pocket carry..

The 21a are available again new. Around here the going rate for a used unfired in box is $200.00

I was under the impression they were out of production. When I asked my LGS store about them they said there was a rumor that Beretta was bringing back the Tomcat 32. But they had nothing firm even about that.

I had one for a few years and it was quite reliable. Finally got rid of it because if I ever had to use it, it might require a doctor to remove it from where whoever I shot might put it. This is a consideration of the caliber not the firearm!

The 25 caliber didn't fit my niche, that's the reason I sold both of my 21a's..Old picture with the 21a lower left..

I have a .22 21A in my pocket as I type this. It has Federal 36 grain
plated HPs in it.

Mine has preferences in ammo but accuracy is what suffers instead of
reliability.

I found that if a case sticks tipping the barrel up without
impeding it at all will, usually, throw the case out of the chamber.
Sort of like a single-shot shotgun with an ejector does.

Almost bought one in .25 last year. If I'd gotten it, I would have carried the .25 (rarely) and practiced with the .22.

Look on the Beretta web site. They know more than anyone if they are making them. They were discontinued for awhile. Now they are back.

$500 for a 21a is highway robbery. I bought my 21a Inox .22 last fall for $300 from a dealer who isnt known for deals.

Consider the Taurus PLY-25. I have the PLY-22 and I like it better than my Beretta. Its $100 cheaper, holds an extra round, has a better DA trigger, and better sights. The PLY 22 and 25 are Tip-ups just like the Beretta, but are DAO.
