Ruger Security, service & speed six grips

I bought these Ruger factory grips from a shop that was clearing out it's old stock two years ago. All were new, never installed. The top row are smooth, non checkered. I don't know if any sixes were ever sold with the non checkered grips. Some of these are now on a few of my sixes.

A friend has a set of factory smooth Security Six "Target" grips squirreled away in his stuff. His is the only other smooth factory Six Series grip I can recall. I could give a pair of the checkered ones a loving home. (hint)

Ditto on the "if you decide to sell" any.

I have a really nice S-6, but the grips were kinda' chewed up, and I have Goodyears on it now. I hate those Goodyears.

I got that pair of NOS Low Back grips that I posted on the Ruger Forum up for a trade, for a checkered set, if you are interested.

I've got new lowbacks on mine, but I'm looking for target style grips for my lowback. Herrett's or whatever I find would be great.

It's strange, as I'm a K-frame guy, but these S-6s are as close as one can get to a K-frame without it being a Smith. When I was a LEO back in the '70s, I wouldn't touch anything besides a Smith, but as time has passed, I've learned that these S-6s are as good or better for practical purposes. I have three now, but I'm looking for numbers four and five. I feel that Ruger makes a good dependable firearm, in any guise. I'm really partial to the Blackhawks...........

I do wish Ruger would start making the S-6 series again, but I'm old and what do I know.............

I've seen those smooth ones before but yes they are rare. Even rarer is the checkered grips that came on some very early Redhawks. They looked like the Security Service ones but sized for Redhawk grip frame.

I don't remember any checkered Red Hawk grips. The Red Hawk on the cover of the 1980 Gun Digest has smooth grips the same as the first Red Hawks to show up at the local range. There is another scarce Ruger factory wood grip that I think is interesting. Ruger sold smooth rose wood GP 100 grips shaped the same as the original Lett rubber grip with wood side panels. I think Ruger only sold them as an accessory.

I have wondered if these are early high back grips. Notice how the width and height of the checkered diamond varies on these grips. The diamond on the last grip, for a speed six, seems to be the normal size diamond on sixes I have bought.

Does anyone know of an alternate source for secuity six grips? Might there be a guy or gal out there known to whittle up grips upon request? Cost?

If they did, I don't think the quality would equal that of the old ones, especially the pre-warning ones. They'd probably be full of MIM stuff and probably wouldn't even come with wood stocks. I don't need any more .357s or .38 Specials, but if I wanted some, I'd be buying up the old pre-warning S-6s.

But making them again? Best leave well enough alone. S&W tried this with their "Classic" revolvers, and they didn't sell as anticipated. Probably be the same with the Rugers.

They should have never stopped, the perfect sized revolver. I have a 2-1/4 inch security six that I would not give up for anything.
