With a purchase permit burning a hole in my pocket, I was in my LGS today and found a very nice used Beretta 92FS, very clean, very tight, dealer will warranty. I put a deposit on it while I wait for the 30 days to pass since my last purchase in NJ. So here's the buyers remorse kicking in. The top of the barrel shows some wear on the blueing, not bad but it's got me wondering, how long does it take to wear the blue off the barrel of one of these pistols? Except for that the thing looks like new, no dings dents or scratches, just the top of the barrel wear. $449. out the door, tax and NICS included. So did I just buy a pistol with a 100,000 round count or a 1,000?
I was going to buy a new one but that price was too good to ignore, I even said to the guy, I wish I didn't see it in the case.

This isn't the gun but this is an accurate example of what I am talking about.


Just found S/N lookup, born on date 1995. Still clean as a hounds tooth but for the barrel wear.
Hope I didn't make a mistake.

I bought a used Beretta 92F in 2008 that showed slight wear like the one in your photo. I shot it a good bit for a year and it did not appear to wear further. The barrel did begin to lightly surface rust where the finish was worn.

Was that the only wear, a smiley on the barrel? For $450 OTD, I wouldn't worry about it.

Because of the open slide design and no barrel bushing this pattern
of bluing wear is common for all Beretta pistols of this general design.
From the 22 LR mod 948 and the 1934 & 1935 .380 and .32 acp on up
to the 92FS. There are slight differences in slide-barrel fit from one
gun to the next so rate of wear will differ somewhat. This modest
bluing wear is not evidence of heavy use and the overall condition
you describe suggests only light useage. I wouldn't worry about it.

I have a 92FS that I have had for about 15 years or so and has had the bluing rubbed away on one side of the bbl where it passes through the front of the receiver but just in one spot. Don't even know how many rounds that have been through it. Been seriously thinking of getting a Bar-Sto barrel for it and new locking block assembly. Frank

Get a presto blue pen and touch up the bluing.makes it look like new again for $8.00. You won't beleive how easy it is.

I bought a used one that has been a lot of fun and a very accurate shooter. After a few thousand rounds there is still only a slight bit of wear showing on the barrel, probably like yours has. For saving a few hundred over a new one you did well. It's broken in already and you can always buy a new barrel or reblue yours. Mine came with five 17 round magazines a holster for $525 plus tax a few years ago. I feel like it was worth it

The Galco CM 202 is a very good holster that rides high and holds the gun securely.

That little bit of wear on a 20 year old pistol is pretty darn good if you ask me.

I had the same problem after a couple hundred rounds. A few years back CDNN had SS Centurion barrels for $50 so I got one. Then found out I needed the new locking block and plunger, another $50. I'd carry it if'n it wasn't bigger than a breadbox. Joe

Don't sweat it. They are surplus guns and have some wear. Mine is a 2004 production with minimal wear. It runs like a champ, and I only paid 300 bux through Classic Firearms out of NC. My Modelo Super B also runs like a champ. So, right around 500 bux, I have two fantastic surplus guns that are dead nuts accurate, and in amazing shape. PM me if you want some pix. Both shoot like new guns.

I'm quite happy with my 92FS Beretta. It has adjustable sights on it, I bought it a few years ago at a local gunshop for some 750$. It's in a perfect condition. I bought some extra Gar-mec mags for it. They just work fine. I use the cheap czech amo S&B 9mm FMJ.
