Any AR platform hunters out there? LMT? LaRue?

I have been wanting to get an AR platformed rifle in 308. I have heard from a couple local guys that the LMT Rifles they own will shoot sub MOA with many different ammunition types....... I have also handled a couple LMT Rifles, I have not been able to put my hands on a LaRue, or shoot either one.

The models I am looking at are.....
LaRue- LTH762-16.1 or LTH762-18

LMT- 308MWS F, 16" or 18"

It looks like LaRue will accept P-MAGS, and the LMT will not......is this true? This is a concern, but not a deal breaker.

I appreciate your advice/opinions as these are not cheap. I want to make a good educated decision.

Thank you.

Mine is not a 308 but it is a Larue OBR which I use as a coyote calling rifle. It is very high quality and very accurate but way heavier than I ever expected. Personally, I don't care for the AR-10...it's just too big and hunky for an automatic rifle. But, if I had to have one I would opt for a 260 Remington caliber. I have shot several different brands of the AR-10 and as far as accuracy and reliability goes it would be hard to go wrong with a DPMS. Sounds like you are after a higher end gun though. Best of luck.

I have a piston driven ruger in 5.56. I love it. The Army has ruined me when it comes to cleaning the "star chamber". So..... I figured removable barrel. Plus I like the thought of a "guaranteed" sub MOA semi auto.

So you may say "well, ruger is making the SR7.62 now". My 5.56 is good, but I'd like a little tighter shot group.

So that's how I ended up with LMT and LaRue. I know they are heavy and since I'm pushing 40, maybe that should be a bigger factor......

I never gave much thought to the 6.5. I always assumed it was for long range target since it shoots flatter..... Is it a good hunting round? I'd like to have "1 caliber does it all" type of thing. Pig, deer, elk......

I have a LMT MWS 16" in 308. It's very fine rifle in every respect, ultra reliable and 1" accurate or better. I also like the interchangeable barrel feature. LMT makes barrels in several calibers. Just loosen two hex screws, pull the old barrel out and drop the new one in. Also, it does use P-MAGS. It is a heavy rifle but that's the nature of the beast, and it makes the 308 seem about like a 223. I don't have any experience with the LaRue, but my experience with the LMT has been nothing but positive. I reckon if the British army likes it, who am I to argue?

I have a Larue tOBR in 308 with a 18" barrel. It is very accurate, sub MOA with good ammo. You can get different barrel lengths and shortly different calibers. The cost of factory mags is the only down side but it does take pmags.

I have BCM and it shoots great. IMHO this is the best AR-15 for the money out there. They come with heavy duty bolts and they are made to last. If you intend to shoot several thousand rounds through one, get a quality one. If you are just getting one to shoot a few hundred rounds, it does not matter too much which platform you choose.

The 6.5MM is a fantastic hunting round. The thing about it as a hunting round is the sectional density, or high ballistic coefficient. This gives better penetration and shock and allows for kills on game much bigger and/or tougher than you would think. The 6.5X55 "Swede" is popular in Europe as a moose gun and was also used quite a bit in Africa as well. That long narrow "spear" of a 6.5mm bullet is a killer. It's funny, the same attribute that makes it a great long range target round also works for hunting. While it is typically listed as a good bullet for deer and antelope type game it really shines on black bear and wild boar where dense muscle and heavy bone have to be shattered for that instant kill. I don't know if I would go so far as to recommend it as ideal for elk or moose, but it will get the job done and for medium tough game it's got my vote.

My buddy has an Armalite in .308 he likes real well. He claims he can hit the bull most times at 300 yards with it. He took it with him when we went mule deer hunting in Wyoming a few years ago together. He didn't shoot anything with it though as we both were holding out for bigger bucks. He did complain it was a bit heavy when we had to do a lot of walking.
He did impress the guides that he was hunting with an AR and wish he could have shot a deer to show them an AR can be a proper hunting rifle.

I don't know if this will help or hurt, but I have a Larue in .308 PredatAR. Don't know if it will shoot sub MOA, because I am not that good of a shot but it is a beautifully made rifle. If you want to suppress it you probably want to go with the OBR because it has an adjustable gas block. It will take pmags and you probably want to check lead times as a buddy waited a year and a half for his.

I got the 308 because the hogs seem to be on steroids here.

My first rifle was in 308. Killed lots of deer. Moved on to 270 30 06 etc.

My son built a 6.8 spc several years ago, deadly on deer.

We were discussing building 2 ar 10s in 308. We came up with a better solution. 6.5 Grendel. Same ballistics, uses an ar 15 platform, less recoil, better after 600 yards and is very accurate.
The
My son finished his 2 weeks ago, sub moa at 100 yards. I finished mine last night. If you are not yet locked into a 308 you might find a 6.5 G to shoot.

And we both will be hunting with ours.

The 6.8 is a good performer but no way is it increasing in popularity very fast.

I have a Stag Arms 7 in 6.8 SPC that I have been handloading for. I am impressed with the box stock accuracy and a great trigger. I haven't shot an animal with it as of yet. I did use a AR-15 on Texas Whitetail Deer a few years back. Took 1 Buck and 3 dry Does with 68 gr. bullets. All four were one shot kills. After having been eating Nevada Mule Deer all my life, I was taken back at how much better tasting the Texas Whitetail venison is. And, my wife having been raised in a hunting family in upstate Michigan really knows how to cook venison. :-)

My favorite deer hunting rifles are a couple of 20" 1-12" twist GI barreled mixmasters. .223/5,56, obviously. Started using .223 about nine years ago and have been amazed! No trick shots, just plant the wee 55gr Sierra soft points in the rib cage and it's DRT. Last deer of the season was taken with a Colt 6720 at a bit over 150 yards. (Experiment to see how the 55gr bullet performed out a 1-7" twist barrel. It passed!) But I prefer the longer barreled versions, so they get most of the field time.

If I hunted from a stand I might take the LMT L129a1 clone out, but I like still hunting and the lightweight AR15 can be carried at the ready for hours.

Nice rifle, but even stripped down it's rather chunky.
