I'm sure some of you are familiar with this but a saddle maker/gunsmith named Hyman Lebman modified a few Colt 1911 pistol to be fully automatic (yesteryear's 'bump stock') with a link from the slide to the trigger, a finger grooved fore stock, a compensator and an extended mag. 18 rounds for .45 acp and 22 rounds for .38 super.
The story gets interesting when two nouveau riche Texas oilmen ordered some of the auto pistols. The men were Lester M. Gillis and John Herbert Dillinger. Gillis was otherwise known as 'Baby Face' Nelson.
The .38 super was used in the 'New Bohemia' shootout. The bullet that killed the FBI agent was traced back to Colt. The other was sent back to Lebman for repair.
When the FBI caught up with Lebman he was charged under the National Firearms act of 1934 and Texas law. Lebman lived until 1990.
