Luger price check (got it)!

I use this in mine, works fine and is accurate so far. If you can find it in the US.

Thank you. I've found it listed at a couple of vendors but it's "out of stock" at the moment.

I think it's worth $700.00 just on looks alone. The P08 has to be one of the best looking pistols designed .
In 1961 my Dad decided to mail order a military surplus pistol from Klein's , he owned no handguns then . Looking through the catalog I championed long and hard for the P08 but Dad, a WWII vet , just knew the P38 was a better pistol. You know which one he bought !
About six years ago he gives me a pistol rug and says I don't need this any longer , you take it.....it was the P38. Still wished he had bought that P08 German Luger instead !
Gary
almost had a P08

That is not a P.08.

1915 DWM made.

1938 and 1941 Mauser made

note. The frames only got marked P.08, from 1941on when the P.38s started to apoear on the field.

To be a P.08 it has to:

1 Be in 9x19(9 Luger) caliber.
2 Have a four inch barrel.
3 Grip safety deleted.
4 Be a German Army contract. Adopted as the official Army military sidearm of Imperial Germany in 1908, hence the name. P for Pistol, 08 for the 1908 adoption year. It soldiered on until the end of WW II, even though it was officialy replaced in 1938 by the... P.38.:D In reality The P.38 production only kicked in in 1940.

All the others have to be called Luger (or Parabellum) pistols only.

The Swiss Army were the first to adopt(in fact it was the Swiss trials that created the evolution of the Borchradt into the Luger) the Luger as a militsry sidearm.

Edit. And I am ever gratefull to the Swiss for that:D. Our Army adopted the Luger as a military sidearm in 1908 (first delivery in 1909) in the same configuration Switzerland did. In 1942/43 we changed to the P.08 configuration

Edit 2. @ gwpercke. Sorry. I was talking about the OP pistol. Not the one you were mentioning.
Thanks T Star for the headsup.

Mario-

The gun that poster's dad ordered from Klein's would have been a German '08. I think that's what he was referring to, not the gun in the OP.

What is Portugal's current military pistol?

Oops.:p

Our present is the P.38. Adopted in 1961.

Edit. And that's what I used, back in 1978.:D

Any ammo recommendations? The Fiocchi 93gr seems to be the one in stock at the few places that have .30 Luger. Also the soft point Fiocchi sells a little cheaper than the FMJ. I'm sure it can be an individual thing with each pistol but have you tried any SP ammo?

I’ve used the Fiocchi JSP in mine with no issues. That’s one advantage of the bottleneck case - feeding a .30 caliber bullet into a .36 caliber chamber means all kinds of bullets will work.

I also use the PPU ammo.

An heads up about .30 Luger Fiocchi

2 weekends ago I saw another .30 Luger go to scrap with a broken bolt on account of Fiocchi ammo. If you are going to use Fiocchi make damn sure you are not getting any pierced primers. If you are. DO NOT USE THAT AMMO IN A LUGER.

That modern Mauser repro copies the Swiss 1929 model. I think Mauser bought the machinery and made their guns on it, presumably in Germany.

The straight front of the handle is a dead giveaway as to that model.

Classic12, thanks for your pictures. I'd never seen the Swiss holster for that model. I look for your posts, usually among the best on this board! And your English is superb, better than that of some Americans here. :)

If Mario (Kurusu) is here today, maybe he can post photos of the Portuguese holsters for their 7.65 Lugers with 4.75 inch barrels. I think Portugal adopted the standard P-08 in 9mm in 1943. But their holster is different from the German ones. Later, they also had P-38's, from what I've read. Don't know the current Portuguese sidearm.

I don't have an M2 holster, but I can show you the picture of one.:D
I know very well what they look like.

I do have an M943 (the Portuguese Byf 42 in our parlance) holster. But it's deep in the safe house. So I'll just show you pictures of one, but not of mine.:p

As a note. There were lots of unissued M943 holsters that got sold as surplus after 1975. The one in the pictures seems to be one of those.
